Popularity of Guaranteed Lifetime Income Options Spike with Demographic Shift

SAN DIEGO, CA – 8 Aug, 2016 – People want a nice, long life—until they have to pay for it.

Longer lifespans due to medical innovation means the need for income in retirement that lasts as long as the individual in question. Since America’s savings rate generally hovers between zero and a little over 5 percent in any given year (and sometimes experiences a negative saving rate), it’s an increasingly tall order.

Compounding the problem is an average retirement account balance of about $100,000, a fraction of the million-dollar minimum most financial professionals say is needed to achieve an affordable quality of life in later years.

So it’s little wonder the concept of “guaranteed lifetime income options”—most often involving variable, fixed or fixed index annuities (FIA)—strike a chord with consumers when raised by financial advisors and insurance agents. Having a stream of income in retirement that’s protected from market losses and global shocks, income that in certain cases increases as time goes on, is important for financial longevity and ensuring retirees don’t outlive their financial resources, experts say.

Demographics are driving demand, which is expected to remain high for some time. According to the Insured Retirement Institute, a lobbying and advocacy organization for the retirement income industry and financial services companies, there are more than 74 million Americans aged 55 and older. However:

• Only 27 percent of baby boomers are confident their savings will last throughout retirement, creating a large pool of consumers who can benefit from lifetime income strategies.

• The aforementioned fixed indexed annuities are experiencing strong demand—a 50 percent increase since 2011—specifically on the attractiveness of their guaranteed lifetime income benefits.

• Demand for FIAs should continue to experience growth with the introduction of new products.

“Seventy-eight percent of consumers consider other sources of guaranteed lifetime income in addition to Social Security to be very valuable,” notes Washington, D.C.-based research firm Greenwald and Associates. However, despite the need and recent spikes in popularity, guaranteed lifetime income options have yet to gain widespread acceptance among the general public.

Many pre-retirees and retirees are not familiar with these financial products, according to a recent Greenwald survey, and those that are have a cursory knowledge of how they work, at best. For example, only 15 percent know that annual payments from immediate annuities are higher than payments from the highest rated bonds. Also, only 32 percent know that immediate annuities generally cost less for those who purchase them later in life.

In addition, many consumers avoid annuities for fear of not having access to their money should they need it. Fully 90 percent of those without annuities that offer guaranteed lifetime income options identify “access to money” as a reason for not owning one.

Yet part of the appeal with guaranteed lifetime income options is their help in reducing what’s known as sequence-of-return risk, or the risk of retiring in a market downturn, a situation in which most financial professionals agree can adversely affect retirement savings. Not only are market returns negatively impacted, but the chances of recovery may be lessened due to the withdrawal of funds to pay for day-to-day living expenses.

“Pre-retirees are concerned about timing the market right in order to retire, something that is very difficult to do,” says Glenn LaBar, a financial professional with San Diego-based WealthBridge Insurance Solutions, which offers information on retirement income strategies.

Unfortunately, adds LaBar, a chapter president of the non-profit American Financial Education Alliance (AFEA) in Carlsbad, California, an organization “that exists to provide a forum where people of all walks of life can gain information, education and experience about managing and understanding their finances,” 80 percent of pre-retirees at or near age 65 are still heavily invested in the market.

“There’s hope and then there’s actuality. They can hope the market favors them when they retire, or they can control a lump sum of retirement money and take advantage of automatic step-up provisions in their account balances. With a product like a fixed index annuity, consumers can pay a premium in exchange for income payouts for life, guaranteed by a contract with an insurance company.”

Suzanne Vega and Duncan Sheik to Perform Sunset Concert on Sands Point Preserve Great Lawn

The Sands Point Preserve Conservancy presents renowned singer-songwriters Suzanne Vega and Duncan Sheik on Sunday, September 25th at 5 p.m. on the magnificent Great Lawn overlooking the Long Island Sound. Guests are invited to explore the preserve’s historic mansions and wooded trails during the afternoon, bring picnic dinners, and settle onto blankets for a beautiful concert.

Both artists have had long, highly successful recording and touring careers, and they have previously performed together, including co-headlining a sold-out run at New York’s Highline Ballroom. They collaborated on the 2011 off-Broadway musical Carson McCullers Talks About Love, for which the artists received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Music in a Play. An album with songs from the play will be released by Vega this October.

The year 2015 marked 30 years since the release of Suzanne Vega’s self-titled album, which contained the hit “Marlene on the Wall.” The following year, Vega’s “Left of Center” for the Pretty in Pink soundtrack received wide circulation. And in 1987, Vega’s album, Solitude Standing, garnered both critical and commercial success, and included the hit songs “Luka” and “Tom’s Diner.” Since then, Vega has released another half dozen albums, was the first major recording artist to perform live in the Internet-based virtual world Second Life, published a book, The Passionate Eye, and started her own record label.

A recent review of a Vega performance described her “excellent songwriting ability – both lyrical and musical… The songwriting is rich and highly personal, and Vega has a way of storytelling by song, capturing fine details in her lyrics.”

Duncan Sheik is best known for the hit single, “Barely Breathing,” which was in heavy radio rotation in the late 1990’s. Sheik is a tremendously gifted songwriter and lyricist who has composed seven musicals, including the Broadway sensation Spring Awakening, which garnered him two Tony awards and a Grammy. In 2015, Sheik released his latest album, Legerdemain, and wrote the music and lyrics to American Psycho: The Musical, with productions in London and on Broadway. Following the concert at the Sands Point Preserve, Sheik will hold a master class for theater students at Long Island University’s Post campus on Monday, September 26th.

“We’re excited to present artists of this caliber in our first major outdoor concert event,” said Beth Horn, the Conservancy’s Managing Director. “The former Guggenheim Estate, with its massive mansions and gorgeous views, is a truly magical setting at twilight, and I think the audience is going to love this experience.

General admission tickets are $45 per person and include parking. A limited number of VIP tickets are available at $125 per person and include priority viewing location, a pre-concert cocktail reception from 4 to 5 p.m. and intermission breaks inside historic Hempstead House with light fare and drinks. Geo Plus Organic Infill Makes a Big Splash

AUSTIN, TX – 8 Aug, 2016 – Located off of the coast of California on Catalina Island, the city of Avalon is a small, low-population city with high expectations. The 4,000 sports-minded residents all currently share one natural grass, multipurpose recreational playing area: Joe Machado Field.  With the high level of usage, the city has decided to convert the field from natural grass to synthetic turf with Geo Plus organic infill and has contracted Hellas Construction for the job.

“[Joe Machado Field] is the only recreational field that we have,” said David Hart, City of Avalon Recreation Assistant. “It runs our 8-man football, high school boys and girls soccer, adult softball leagues, adult flag football, co-ed softball…it’s the only place that we have and with a regular field there was no way that we could keep up with daily access for everything.  [Synthetic turf] is going to allow us to open up the field for daily recreation.”

City officials saw the need for a low-maintenance, dependable playing surface, and knew that Hellas was the only team that could get the job done. “Hellas does it all, from head to toe, from dirt to turf,” said Hart.

Hellas’ teams are working on the perfect Design-Build plans to maximize the space and use of the field.  The current natural grass field will be converted to a Matrix® synthetic turf field with Helix technology, marked for a variety of sporting events.  Hellas’ exclusive Matrix turf system will allow for a predictable surface with maximum, year-round playability, and will require little maintenance from the city. 

“With the drought conditions that are going on in Cali we couldn’t upkeep the field. With being used 11,000 hours a year, it’s hard to keep grass alive. Now, we’ll be able to triple our programing, which was our number one reasoning in going to synthetic turf,” said Hart. 

Geo Plus organic infill for artificial turf, composed of organic coconut fibers and cork, will also be installed on the field.  The option to install organic infill was a big draw when the city chose Hellas for the Design-Build sports construction project.  “The fact that we’re going all organic is huge environmentally for us,” said Hart.  Geo Plus is the next best thing to natural grass, offering reduced field temperatures and reducing the need for water by more than 90%.

The City of Avalon is one of the many project installations to utilize the benefits of Geo Plus organic infill.  Other recent notable installations of Geo Plus include Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo, CA, Robert F. Kennedy High School in Delano, CA, and Jourdanton High School in Jourdanton, TX.

Kia Motors scouts for factory location in Andhra, TN

Kia’s CEO earlier stated they needed a factory in India to tap growth there and offset slowing sales in Russia and China

Senior management officials from Kia Motors, a sister organisation of South Korean automobile major Hyundai, have visited various sites in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for establishing a manufacturing facility, said sources.

The company is said to be planning a factory with annual capacity of 300,000 units. has a facility at Sriperumbudur, about 40 km from here.

Asked, a spokesperson replied by e-mail: “We are continually evaluating potential locations for overseas manufacturing facilities, including India, to secure additional engines for future growth. No concrete plans have been finalised.”

Officials from both state governments have confirmed that company officials visited various sites. In Andhra, the team visited seven-eight sites during their week’s trip to India, they said.

In Tamil Nadu the team visited Pillaipakkam, where Ashok Leyland and Nissan were supposed to set up a facility to manufacture light commercial vehicles at a cost of Rs 4,150 crore.

The management team was led by Han-woo Park, president (standing) of Kia. Park was earlier heading Hyundai’s Indian operations as managing director.

A few years earlier, Hyundai officials said Kia might look at setting up a plant close to theirs’ at Sriperumbudur. Hyundai operates two plants, with a combined annual output of 680,000 units a year.

Kia’s chief executive earlier stated they needed a factory in India to tap growth there and offset slowing sales in Russia and China, according to reports.

In 2015, Kia was 74 place on Interbrand’s ranking of 100 ‘Best Global Brands’, with estimated brand value of $57 billion.

The company has a compact crossover utility vehicl brand, Sportage; an urban crossover brand, Soul; compact cars Forte and Rio; and mid-size and luxury sedans under the brand names Optima, Cadenza and K900. The company also has hybrid and electric vehicles on offer in some countries.

Her next position at a local firm exposed her to immigration and she has never looked back.
