Datuk Seri Jessy Lai and her 50 other colleagues from Mon Space Group have promised to pledge their organs to the National Transplant Resource Centre of Malaysia (Pusat Sumber Transplan Nasional) today at her Bukit Jalil office in Kuala Lumpur.
Organ donation is a medical procedure which involves the process of donating bodily organs or tissue from a living or dead person to be transplanted into living recipients who, in many cases, is very ill or dying.
Datuk Seri Jessy Lai said that influential personalities, public figures and both private and public companies must play their role in community service to drive this campaign in order to save lives.
“Private and public companies, NGOs, parents, teachers, celebrities and so forth need to raise awareness of why organ donation is so important. It has to begin from a leadership position, not from an external organisation. That is why all of us here at Mon Space Group are pledging, because it happens when the leader takes the first step.”
Organ donation has proven to save or improve the quality of life for the organ donor recipient. In Malaysia, only 35,000 people in 2015 have pledged to donate their organs, representing only 1% of the total population.
According to Datuk Seri Jessy Lai, The National Transplant Resource Centre of Malaysia has an annual waiting list of nearly 20,000 and the numbers grow every year. Due to the complexity of the procedure and medical conditions of each patient, not all willing donors are able to successfully donate even if they consent to it.
“It could take years for someone to receive a transplant, if a relative or family member of the patient is not in the position to donate,” says Datuk Seri Jessy Lai.
Currently, only 1% of the Malaysian population or 300,000 people have pledged to donate their organs.
“The transplant centre needs more donors to be able to cope with the fast growing number of organ donations in the waiting list simply because it is a complex procedure and very time sensitive.”
But above all, Datuk Seri Jessy Lai stresses that there is a need for more organ donations after death to ensure a steady supply of organs and to prevent people from going abroad to illegally source for organs.
“It is the patient’s right to seek other options, including illegally sourced ones, which could do more damage than good to the living,” she says.
