FTCC Hosts Small Business Summit In Fayetteville NC

FTCC held its Second Annual Small Business Summit during the first week of May 2017. This year’s Summit was presented by the FTCC Small Business Center and Business Curriculum programs and enthusiastically sponsored again by Wells Fargo.

The inaugural Small Business Summit was the brainchild of Cindy Burns, Dean of Business Programs at Fayetteville Technical Community College. Her idea was to create an opportunity at FTCC to “support and encourage the entrepreneurial community to start and grow businesses in Cumberland County.”

FTCC President Larry Keen expanded on this theme with his opening remarks, “Our local community college is pleased to be a continuously expanding part of the Fayetteville area entrepreneur and business endeavor. We hope to provide a quality platform today for fellowship, learning and networking.”

The quality of the event was evident from the beginning as the networking segment kicked off over an expansive breakfast spread prepared by the FTCC Culinary Department and offering fresh coffee and juice, freshly baked muffins, scones and assorted cookies and fruit.

Introducing the panel segments, Dean Cindy Burns expressed this sentiment to the attendees, “One of our major Summit goals is to provide all of you today with an opportunity for networking.  Then we’ll follow that with a selection of great tools, resources and best practices from financial and marketing specialists. We want you to have every chance for success.”

Toward that end the financial specialist panel for this year’s Summit consisted of professionals from Wells Fargo and the local Center for Economic Empowerment & Development (CEED). The marketing specialist panel was comprised of Keri Dickson, Marketing Manager of Women’s View magazine and two leading business professionals from local companies with global reach, Candy Sugarman of Play Big Online Marketing and Don Matheson, CEO of Matheson Marketing & Consulting.

The panel discussion format consisted of pre-selected questions posed to each of the panelists. They then shared information gleaned from their real world experience in both Internet marketing and conventional offline marketing. Afterwards, time was set aside for the audience to pose their own questions related to their individual businesses or projects. 

Based on comments from attending business professionals, the event achieved its goals.

Mary Kay Sales Director, Karen Link shared her thoughts this way, “The marketing panel was extremely informative as it exposed strategy and tactics for combining offline and online marketing which is very timely in today’s world of technology. I will be applying what I learned here today, the first chance I get.”

ETBU Honors Fallen Students With Symmetry Turf Field

MARSHALL, TX – 1 Jun, 2017 – East Texas Baptist University recently held a ceremony to honor the one-year anniversary of the loss of two former football player’s lives.

Last April, freshmen D.J. McClintock, Jr. and Tre Harrison drowned while swimming off campus in Marshall.

A crowd of family, faculty, and staff from ETBU all gathered for a prayer service to honor their memory. ETBU football players released 96 balloons in honor of Tre who wore number 96 and 12 balloons in honor of D.J. who wore number 12.

ETBU president, Dr. Blair Blackburn, also had a special announcement at the ceremony.

Symmetry Turf announced its Genesis turf product would be released as a special edition “Genesis 4:9” version. The turf will have a 49 ounce face-wieght and a logo with “Genesis 4:9, I Am My Brother’s Keeper” installed on the field.

“That is a reminder for all of us to keep each other accountable to Christ,” said Blackburn.

One of the player’s lost his life while trying to save the other.

ETBU also voted later in the month to turf the baseball infield. Symmetry Turf is in the process of installing artificial turf on the softball field and the baseball infield.

The football field is completed and the school will host a camp led by the University of Texas on June 5.

Thank God it’s Friday (TGIF) is one of the most recognizable phrases around the world.

To be sure, companies such as KPMG, Amazon and Google have adopted a shortened work week albeit on a selective basis. However, the difference here is all the employees of Beroe will be eligible for a four-day work week.

While there are mixed opinions about the concept of four-day work week, Beroe believes in improving the work-life balance of its employees with the hope that the initiative increases their creativity as well as productivity. After all, the type of work done at Beroe does not involve repetitive tasks — on the contrary, employees need to wear their thinking hats to solve client problems.

Now comes the question: Why are we doing this? The move to introduce a four-day work week is a continuation of the company’s employee benefit program. For example, Beroe is perhaps the only company in India to offer a one-year of maternity benefit for its women employees as against the government mandated 26 weeks.  Our zeal towards employee wellbeing reflects in the fact that the company has recently been certified as a Great Place to Work in India.

“We believe a truncated work week will improve productivity and make our young employees, a majority of whom are millennials, more energetic and creative when they return from their 3-day break. Working long hours don’t always work. Harvard Business Review said that there is a large body of research that suggests that regardless of our reasons for working long hours, overwork does not help us. Also, working long hours don’t automatically translate to more output.

While a four-day work week is a great initiative, not all are in favor of the system. Some of the companies that have implemented this system have gone back to the five-day work week due to reasons such as changing business climate and investor pressure.

Other arguments include that employees would be prone to more stress as the work week gets compressed and deadlines get tighter with the work load remaining the same. Client-management also could become challenging and delivery schedules may get affected.

Whatever said and done, Beroe is implementing this four-day work week initiative with utmost good faith.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – 1 Jun, 2017 – This week a music app called Kwaver launched a new version of their app that musicians will without a doubt fall in love with. For those of you who haven’t heard of Kwaver, it’s a music collaboration app that makes it easy for anyone to create new music and collaborate with musicians from around the world using just their phone.

Let’s say you’re a musician who wrote a melody line but can’t come up with lyrics, or you created a guitar line or beat but no melody line. Kwaver connects you with artists who match your musical style, are willing to collaborate and can do this instantly through their mobile device.

Now, the new Kwaver app has introduced some features which have been mentioned in a previous update and others which you have probably never thought of. Its got a sleek new interface, you can now upload content from your camera roll, make yourself look sharp using the new instagram-like video filters, trim content and even compete to go up the ranks on the leaderboard!

The app is currently available for iOS only but should be coming to Android later on in the year. So for those of you with an iPhone don’t hate, collaborate!
