Vision for 1 Thousand, a 501c3-Non-Profit, Chetan Raguthu, CEO spoke to a select group of thought leaders from around the world at the Leadership Speakers Academy at West Point, New York Oct 6th – 9th, 2016.

Chetan, a high school senior, wanted to do something that would leave an impact on the world. He had no idea what he wanted to do starting out until he started researching passionate causes he could support. His parents encouraged him to pursue his goals and make a change in the world. Soon after, he started Vision for 1 Thousand: a non-profit organization that will give back 1,000 people the gift of sight. The project’s goal is to raise $30,000 to sponsor 1,000 eye surgeries around the world.

The target demographic is those who cannot afford medical services. Vision for 1 Thousand aims to provide “The Gift of Sight” to 1,000 people by sponsoring affordable eye surgery with medical care. For many of the recipients, their quality of life will improve immediately after recovery.

During his presentation, he went on to say, “I was challenged by my parents to make a change in the world I’m here today speaking to you to inspire you to stand with me to lead the change towards a better world. My vision is to give back 1,000 people the gift of sight to let them see and experience the magic of sight to cherish the world as those who have sight.”

The symposium of speakers included legendary Lt. General Honore’ who commented, “The next war will be about water, not oil.” From global and domestic terrorist threats to natural disasters, we encounter new risks to our individual, community, and economic security each day. We will need to leverage technology to deal with the addition of 7 to 10 million people added to this earth. Imagine a plane landing at LaGuardia and the computer tells the pilot that the passenger in seat 22 has a fever. None of this is invented, and we have to live up to our ability to be innovators and dreamers.”

The other keynote speaker, Col. and Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, an American engineer, and a former astronaut detailed his next mission. As the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 11, he was one of the first two humans to land on the Moon, and the second person to walk on it. He spoke about going big on his mission to Mars. He commented, “In my opinion, there is no more convincing way to demonstrate American leadership for the remainder of this century than to commit to a permanent presence on Mars, going to Mars without setting up a colony — launching only round-trip manned missions is not enough, nor would establishing human outposts on the moon.”

Chetan was part of an elite group of leaders invited to West Pont. In his closing remarks, he commented, “Due to numerous advances in technology and medicine blindness can be fixed or even completely reversed. Currently, 285 million people around the world are suffering from vision impairment now, and I want you to let that sink in and think about how much you would pay to get back your vision. I know that many of you would do anything within your power to read again. But did you know that it only takes thirty dollars to sponsor one surgery in a developing country to completely restore someone sight?”

“I certainly did not know that when I started down this path. But I’m here to share this insight with you and to give 1,000 people back their vision and live once again, being able to work, to see their family, to look at nature and cherish their existence to their fullest. How many of you think that giving only thirty dollars is a worthy cause to restore someone’s vision now? I’m asking you to dig into your pockets and to pull out thirty dollars sixty dollars or ninety dollars or more that’s all it takes to give the gift of sight to one or more people around the world so join me in giving back 1,000 people their vision.”

OpenTaxi Launches First Ever Universal Taxi App In Competition With Uber

OpenTaxi Technologies, LLC proudly announce the release of their HTML5 taxi hailing app called OpenTaxi. Amr Metwally, CEO and creator of the app explains that the open source application does everything for legitimate taxi that you expect from the major rideshare apps. “We provide all the popular features Uber offers including scheduled rides known as time calls”, says, Amr. While some say it is too late to salvage the taxi industry, Amr lamented, “As a software engineer, early 2009, I came up with the idea similar to Uber while moonlighting as a LA Cabbie.” Unfortunately for Amr, stiff taxicab regulations crippled his idea before writing a line of code.  Fortunately, in 2014, Eric Spiegelman, a forward thinking entertainment lawyer was appointed president of the Los Angeles Taxicab Commission by city mayor Eric Garcetti for the sole purpose of making taxi more like Uber.

Although OpenTaxi was not the first taxi app to tackle Uber. As Andrey Primushko president of United Taxi put it, “We have two types of apps presented to us. Either by developers who know technology or cab drivers who know the business.” What makes OpenTaxi so unique is that Amr knows both, mobile technology and the taxi business.

Yet, the same question remains posed by pundits, “Why taxis? Uber is cheaper and the service is better.” Arthur, owner and operator of a United Taxi cab responds, “It’s true, in the past, we made mistakes. But now with our livelihoods in peril, we must change.” And change will come. In addition to a smiley or sad faced ratings system, The Plunge is OpenTaxi’s secret weapon.

After a long Halloween weekend, millions of riders around the world have woken up to astronomical Uber bills sometimes exceeding 10 times the normal fare. “The Surge is modern day highway robbery” warns Arthur of United Taxi. “Rules and regulations for taxi were put in place to protect the public from price gouging”. Taxi drivers like Uber drivers are independent contractors. Amr elaborates, “We give them the power to change the meter rate. Never above city rates but as low as half off”.

AUSTIN, TX – 11/2/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — Hellas Construction crossed yet another major milestone after installing the first ever TPS Court Surfaces System in Fort Richardson, Alaska, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District, to provide a higher quality of life and recreational opportunities to soldiers and their families.   

Kiewit Building Group, Inc., a federal construction contractor in Alaska, subcontracted Hellas for three basketball court surfaces as a part of the $57 million Brigade Combat Team Light Complex project. “The project was required by the Army’s directive of Fort Richardson, as part of the Army Modular Force/Global Positioning Initiative,” said Dena O’Dell, Public Affairs Specialist of USACE in Alaska. The project also included additional barracks, baths, service and storage areas.

The newly surfaced basketball courts serve the entire population of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). Excluding Civilian employees and retirees, the base has about 17,000 active duty military and 19,000 family members.

“Alaska is the perfect location to showplace the quality, durability, and adaptability of our sport court surfaces. The great amount of coordination and communication between our crew, Kiewit, and the military, helped contribute to a beautifully finished, successful project,” said Brian Jorgensen, Hellas Project Manager, Tennis Division. Hellas again shows there is nowhere they can’t go, in completing their first project in “America’s Last Frontier” – Alaska.

The Secret Formula for Becoming a Millionaire

11/2/2016 — If you think that millionaires grew up surrounded by wealth, never having to work a 9-to-5 job and becoming rich by making risky investments, you’re wrong.

New data shows that 77 percent of millionaires surveyed in 2016 for U.S. Trust’s Insights on Wealth and Worth came from middle class or working class households. A slim majority (52 percent) said that most of their wealth came from earned income, while 32 percent credited investing.

Millionaire and multi-millionaires, in fact, come from a wide range of careers, according to a survey by the Spectrem Group, a research firm studying affluent and high net worth investors. The most common occupations among the wealthiest Americans are: manager (16 percent), professional (15 percent) and educator (13 percent).

The Factors Driving Wealth

There are more millionaires in the U.S. than ever, according to the latest estimation of the Spectrem Group. In 2015, the U.S. had 10.4 million households with assets of $1 million or greater, in addition to their homes, a 3 percent increase from 2014. Among those households, 1.2 million were worth between $5 million and $25 million.

According to Steve Shepherd, wealth advisor with Tompkins Financial Advisors in White Plains, NY, what created the net worth of the millionaires was not being born into wealth, but having a certain outlook on life. When they were asked by U.S. Trust to identify the three values that were most emphasized by their parents, the millioniares reported educational achievement, financial discipline and the importance of working.

Education plays a significant role in laying the foundation for creating wealth. A survey of millionaires by BMO Private Bank showed that 90 percent of those polled had earned college degrees. Among all Americans, only 36 percent aged 25 -29 had graduated from college, according to a 2015 study by the National Center for Education Statistics.

Tompkins Financial Advisors see another factor associated with wealth among their clients: having a lasting marriage. People who are married are economically better off when they retire compared to singles who never tied the knot, according to studies from Ohio State University and the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). On average, married people accumulate ten times the assets of single people by the time they retire, the NBER found. By contrast, the average divorced person loses 77 percent of the net worth he or she had while married, an OSU study showed.

The Investing Habits of Millionaires

Saving money at an early age pays off, says Shepherd. Multi-millionaires surveyed in the U.S. Trust study on average began saving at 14, held their first job at 15 and had invested in equities by age 25.

Many millioniares put their money in conventional investments. In the U.S. Trust survey, 83 percent used buy-and-hold investment strategies for part of their wealth, while 89 percent said equities and debt instruments had generated the bulk of their portfolio gains.

Shepherd says he and his colleagues at Tompkins Financial Advisors see a majority of these millionaires focused on reducing the tax impact and risk in their investment strategies. The survey showed that 55 percent said it’s more important to minimize the impact of taxes in investment decisions than to pursue the highest possible gains with no regard to tax consequences. Similarly, 60 percent said lowering their risk exposure is important, even if it results in a lower yield.

And here’s one other common characteristic of millionaires worth noting: 78 percent of them relied on financial professionals to help manage their investments.

Amor’s representatives were initially reluctant to pursue the project, as TV often requires a multi-year commitment and her movie career is on fire. But she fell in love with the project from the first moment she read the script “Adolfo Rivera is a talented Director, I can’t wait to work with him”.

The popular Spanish actress, is also in negotiations to join the all-star cast “The Last Wizard”, about the life of the polemic cosmic artist Jack Armstrong. For Amor, Damian Chapa’s regular, will mean her second collaboration with Eric Roberts. The movie is set to start shooting next summer in Los Angeles.

Recycling Superstars: Manufacturers Who Take Recycling Seriously

MILLS RIVER, NC – 2 Nov, 2016 – Creating a quality product is hard work. For some companies, when a piece comes off a manufacturing line with the wrong imprint, a slightly scratched frame or a blemish, the flawed item is oftentimes designated for the recycling bin.

At Mansfield Plumbing in Perrysville, Ohio, where more than a million toilets and sinks are crafted each year, millions of pounds of fired scrap and spent plaster molds are recycled annually. Instead of going into landfills, the material is used as road aggregate.

Additionally, the small-town facility is making a big difference by recycling 285,000 pounds of cardboard and cartons, 4,000 pounds of paper, 1,000 pounds of plastic and 5,200 wooden pallets each year. The company also saves about four million gallons of water a year through its water conservation program designed to reduce water usage by 10 percent at its manufacturing facility.

According to the environmental team at Mansfield Plumbing, the goal is to recycle and reuse as much raw material as possible. Along with being aggressive in recycling hard materials, the company also salvages the waste heat from its kilns and operates with gas consumption lower than industry standards. A lighting project designed to use wattage more effectively saves energy in the plant.

Another U.S. company making a positive environmental impact is DaVinci Roofscapes out of Lenexa, Kansas.  The synthetic roofing manufacturer has recycled almost three million pounds of processed polymer in the last six years. The composite roofing tiles deemed below quality are segregated by color, ground up and then molded into starter shingles, which are generally unseen on the roof.

Why so much waste at the roofing manufacturer? Because each time the company “switches” to running a different color through their processing equipment (and they offer 50 standard colors options) there’s a transition between the colors. Those transition tiles are off spec and are recycled.

“Since every roofing tile we create is 100 percent recyclable, our operations are extremely environmentally-friendly,” says Bryan Ward, vice president of operations at DaVinci Roofscapes. “In 2016 we accelerated our commitment to recycling by investing in a new grinding recycling system that handles purge (large melted chunks of polymer that can weigh approximately 50 pounds each) as well as off spec product.”

Ward’s company takes recycling a step further — by encouraging roofers to return unused tiles from project jobsites to the company for recycling. DaVinci even pays for the cost of returning the tiles within a 500-mile radius of their Kansas plant. “Why should a roofer throw tiles into the landfill when we have a good way to recycle them?” says Ward. “Just by offering this easy program we’re able to reuse more than 5,000 pounds of polymer tiles each year that come back to us.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in 2013 Americans generated about 254 million tons of trash.* About 34.3 percent of this material was recycled. Thanks to smart recycling efforts taking place daily at facilities such as DaVinci and Mansfield, that number is growing and the amount of waste being sent to landfills is being reduced.
