The Houston Southeast Management District was created in 2001 to promote, develop, encourage and maintain employment, commerce, transportation, housing, recreation, arts, entertainment, economic development, safety and the public welfare in the Southeast Houston area. The “District” is bounded by Interstate 45 and U.S. 59 to the north, Main Street to the west, and North MacGregor and Griggs Road to the south.

Carter Richards, who attended the University of Houston and University of St. Thomas, also currently serves as the 1st Vice Chair of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), which is comprised of more than 200 African-American newspapers across the U.S. She is also the recipient of numerous awards and accolades in recognition of her civic involvement and contributions to the local Houston community.

Hundreds graduate April 22 from Detroit Rescue Mission feeling empowered, hopeful

DETROIT, MI – 20 Apr, 2016 – The men and women graduating from life-bettering programs of 107-year-old Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM, http://drmm.org) at 11am on Fri. April 22 at 3606 East Forest Detroit, say they feel empowered, hopeful and poised to contribute to the betterment of society.

Having successfully completed their programs at DRMM facilities in metro Detroit, the graduates numbering over 300 would be conferred with certificates of achievement at the free admission event to be attended by their friends and family as well as elected officials and community leaders. Two of the graduates will also receive yet-to-be-disclosed donations from DRMM president Dr. Chad Audi. 

“DRMM has given me the skills that I need to live a clean and sober life. I will be the woman that God wants me to be,” said Shawana Boyd. Another graduate, Timothy Burch, spoke of the opportunity DRMMgave him to “step back and take a look at my life and how I can better improve upon my life going forward.” Yet another graduate, Carthel Thornton, noted that “DRMM has helped me get my health stable and address my addiction. I have found an apartment and will be moving on with my life.” As for Charles Scott who could neither find employment nor rent an apartment after getting out of prison, “The Mission not only gave me employment as a cook but they are… changing my whole outlook on life and making me a better person especially in the way I treat others.”

Speakers at the luncheon include Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, Detroit News columnist Bankole Thompson, and former pro basketballer, Kurt David.

The event will also feature presentation of the 2016 DRMM Pillar Awards to Amy Lange of Fox 2 News, Karen Bouffard of Detroit News, Judge Timothy Kenny of Wayne County Circuit Court, and Muhammed Qazi, founder of Ciena Healthcare. 

“It is indeed a day of happiness and hope for us and our commendable graduates, many of whom are already gainfully employed in metro Detroit,” posited Dr. Audi.

Sugar Land, TX – The BP MS 150 is a two-day fundraising bike ride organized by the National MS Society. The ride is the largest event of its kind in North America with 13,000 cyclists, 3,500 volunteers and countless spectators along the route and at the finish line in Austin. The 2015 BP MS 150 had a record breaking year raising $20.3 million dollars, bringing hope to many who are living with multiple sclerosis.

Joe Rothchild, founder of the KW Cycling Team, has a passion for riding and for physical health. Joe wanted a cycling team to support the National MS Society fundraising efforts and with the help of Norman Lew, Agent Services Director, they got the team “off the ground and running,” now for the 6th year. Each year with Joe’s support a team of volunteers plan and work the details for a flawless and memorable ride for the Cycling Team.

The Magnum Foundation publishes Bruce Davidson: An Illustrated Biography, the second volume in the Magnum Legacy Series

With the publication of Bruce Davidson by Vicki Goldberg on May 4, 2016, the Magnum Foundation continues its series of illustrated biographies about the lives of Magnum photographers behind their well-known photographs. This second book is the first ever full-length biography of Bruce Davidson, tracing his life through the prism of his work and archives. It follows Eve Arnold, which explored the life and work of Magnum’s first female photographer.

Bruce Davidson is one of this country’s most acclaimed documentary photographers. His work records the key events of his times, from the 1950s youth gang culture that foretold the rebellious 1960s to the struggle for civil rights and the conditions that made that struggle imperative in both the South and the North, to the crime-ridden New York of the 1970s. Author of such classic photo books as East 100th Street, Subway, and Brooklyn Gang, Davidson started photographing as a kid on the streets of Chicago in the 1940s. He uses his camera as a means of connection discovering something inside himself while creating an emotional bond with his subjects. He continues to work today at age 82.

Davidson has been a member of the Magnum photographer’s collective for more than fifty-seven years, almost his entire professional life and this creative community has served as an important framework and anchor to his career. “In 2007, the members of Magnum formed the Magnum Foundation, which supports preservation and scholarship in the history of documentary photography. It also expands the possibilities for socially engaged photographic practice by fostering diverse voices and creative approaches across disciplines,” says Kristen Lubben, Executive Director of the Magnum Foundation. “This series of biographies adds to our understanding of this rich history.”

The Magnum Legacy series addresses the creative processes of Magnum photographers, from the agency’s early founders to more contemporary members, weaving together biographical text, archival materials, and iconic imagery. Published in partnership with Prestel, each book includes a comprehensive biography by a leading author supplemented by contact sheets, caption notes, tear sheets, and diaries, as well as an illustrated chronology of the photographer’s life.

“Little has been published about how the personal experiences of these renowned photographers shaped their commitment to telling stories. This series invites us to imagine their world on the other side of the lens,” said Andrew E.
