Lumos Networks names Michael Creech as Director of Sales of Data Center business

ROCHESTER, NY – 29 Aug, 2017 – Threats are real for every business. There are people that target your network and your users who have bad intentions. The threat landscape is ever changing. According to the major findings section within Cisco’s 2017 Midyear Cybersecurity Report;

  • Business email compromise (BEC) has become a highly lucrative threat vector for attackers. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), US$5.3 billion was stolen due to BEC fraud between October 2013 and December 2016. In comparison, ransomware exploits took in US$1 billion in 2016.
     
  • Spyware that masquerades as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) is a form of malware—and a risk that many organizations underestimate or dismiss completely. However, spyware can steal user and company, weaken the security posture of devices, and increase malware infections. Spyware infections are also rampant. Cisco threat researchers studied three select spyware families and found that they were present in 20 percent of the 300 companies in the sample.
     
  • The dramatic increase in cyber-attack frequency, complexity, and size over the past year suggests that the economics of hacking have turned a corner, according to Radware, a Cisco partner. Radware notes that the modern hacking community is benefiting from quick and easy access to a range of useful and low-cost resources.
     
  • When it comes to enterprise security, cloud is the ignored dimension: Open authorization (OAuth) risk and poor management of single privileged user accounts create security gaps that adversaries can easily exploit. Malicious hackers have already moved to the cloud and are working relentlessly to breach corporate cloud environments, according to Cisco threat researchers.
     
  • In late 2016, Cisco threat researchers discovered and reported three remote code-execution vulnerabilities in Memcached servers. A scan of the Internet a few months later revealed that 79 percent of the nearly 110,000 exposed Memcached servers previously identified were still vulnerable to the three vulnerabilities because they had not been patched.

Moses and Rooth Attorneys at Law have proclaimed a winner for their 2017 Legal Scholarship Contest. Aleschia Hyde was awarded the $1,000 scholarship which she plans to utilize when she enrolls in the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in August of this year. The Legal Scholarship is one of many offered by this prestigious Orlando law firm to help fund the education of future legal scholars.

The scholarship winner announced was chosen based on a number of different factors. These include her current academic status, community involvement, school engagement, and her submitted short essay. Miss Hyde’s academics include being a researcher as well as obtaining an M.A. at the University of Chicago, an M.Ed. from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. She plans to attend Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in the study of immigration or criminal law. 

The scholarship essay submitted by Miss Hyde tackled a popular area of law that has been in debate more recently. She spoke about the Second Amendment which gives all American citizens the right to bear arms. Her article was specifically focused on the legislative actions that are placing restrictions on firearms. Miss Hyde evaluates these restrictions and whether or not they infringe on the Second Amendment right of all Americans. 

Miss Hyde breaks down firearm legislative actions into two general types. The first she considers to be the restrictions on where and when firearms can be used. She believes this doesn’t infringe on any legal rights as an American citizen can still possess a firearm, which is the basis of the Second Amendment. 

The second type she explains in her scholarship-winning essay is the restriction on who can use firearms. She cites examples of restrictions instituted after major public incidents, including the assassination of President Ronald Regan and the Charleston Massacre. Miss Hyde shares her opinion that there is more ambiguity when it comes to this second type of restriction as many consider them a matter of public safety.
