At a time when China is at the forefront of importance on our global stage, it is imperative students gain an understanding of Chinese culture and history.

In our 5-Day Language Exchange trip, designed especially for the International Baccalaureate’s Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) program, students will participate in two school exchanges where they can practice their Mandarin as well as learn about Shandong’s history and culture through visits to 3 of its cities. Students will be able to discuss environmental issues with local high school students in a moderated panel as well as help local primary school students create an English-language textbook. Extracurricular activities include a shao-kao cook-off and sketching session on Mt. Tai.

HILLIARD HIGH SCHOOLS MOVE TO HELLAS MATRIX TURF

HILLIARD, OHIO – 19 Aug, 2017 – Hellas just renovated Darby and Davidson high school stadiums in the Hilliard City School District of Ohio, exchanging natural grass for Hellas’ Matrix® Turf with Helix Technology. Hilliard School Districts, like many school districts across the nation, are switching to artificial turf to decrease maintenance costs and save water, while increasing availability and utilization that synthetic turf allows.

Superintendent John Marschhausen said, “This is a long time coming for Hilliard.  Now all three high schools will be able to provide a similar experience.”

The district also selected the Cushdrain® Pad, a paved-in-place, elastic layer that will increase the shock absorption of the turf system at the two school stadiums, which means a lower G-Max and a safer playing surface with fewer concussions. The Cushdrain Pad will improve drainage of the two fields after heavy rains and provide a planarity that will hold its form through three to four lifecycles of turf.

Hilliard Davidson Athletic Director Nate Bobek said, “We are thrilled to get our students out on the new fields.  It is a game changer for us!  These fields will not only help our football teams but will help all our athletic teams at Hilliard Davidson.” 

With the variety and amount of weather experienced the Ohio area, having a natural grass field can limit usage. Having an artificial playing surface will allow more games to be played, more practices to be had, and more activities performed on the stadium turf.

Bobek said, “Along with providing an excellent field for our sports teams, it will also provide our marching band with an area they can utilize for practice.”

Hilliard Darby Athletic Director Chris Ludban said, “Turf will allow our freshman and JV teams to play on the varsity field regardless of how much rain has fallen.  They will not get moved because our field became unplayable.”

Global Peace Meditation Scheduled for Solar Eclipse

19 Aug, 2017 – Meditation practitioners and lightworkers from around the world will hold a global meditation to coincide with the highly anticipated solar eclipse on Monday, August 21st at 11:11 am PDT (Los Angeles time) with the goal of creating positive energy for healing change and peace.

The meditation time for other cities is 8:11 pm EET in Cairo, 8:11 pm CEST in Paris, 7:11 pm BST in London, 2:11 pm EDT in New York, and 1:11 pm CDT in Chicago.

Participants in Asia will meditate on Tuesday, August 22nd at 2:11 am CST in Taipei and Beijing, at 3:11 am in Tokyo, and at 4:11 am in Sydney. Additional time zones can check the exact time of the meditation here.

The solar eclipse is the first since 1918, with the path of totality going through the continental United States, and offers a great opportunity to come together to create unity. Organizers believe that unity is the most powerful catalyst for world peace.

High Fees Depressing Sales for Mayweather-McGregor Superfight

SOUTH WINDSOR, CT – 19 Aug, 2017 – As the much-hyped fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Conor McGregor at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday approaches, one thing is becoming clear: Aggressively high prices and per-ticket fees are threatening to leave a remarkably high number of seats vacant.

While promoter Leonard Ellerbe has attempted to mute reports of sagging sales by claiming ticket sales have already exceeded $60 million for the fight – approaching the $72 million gate record set by Mayweather’s 2015 fight against Manny Pacquiao – the numbers make his assurances tough to believe. As of Friday afternoon, there were 78 rows in the arena where fans could purchase as many as six tickets from Ticketmaster.

The secondary ticketing marketplace was similarly stagnant, with TicketNews.com reporting that prices have fallen by approximately 10 percent at the bottom end of the market, and much higher among the highest price options.

From the start of the sale, numerous factors have conspired to depress the figures. Fans interested in buying tickets when the sale began had to register through Ticketmaster’s “Verified Fan” program, and the only option for delivery was for the buyer to pick their tickets up in Las Vegas the week of the fight. By far, however, the biggest barrier has been exorbitantly high prices and per-ticket fees.

The lowest priced seat in the arena went for $500 plus fees from Ticketmaster. Once those were (almost immediately) gone, the next step up was $2,500, which came with another $218 in service and facility charges per ticket. Seats close to the action – also still available in the primary marketplace – were more than $10,000 each, with another $660.35 in fees.

“The promoters of this fight made the classic mistake of trying to wring every dime out of the consumer from the start,” says Don Vaccaro, CEO of TicketNetwork. “Instead of letting the market arrive at the final price, they got greedy, and it looks like they’re stuck choosing between dropping their prices drastically – or having a half-empty arena for an event that they’ve hyped as the biggest fight in history.”

For consumers still looking to catch the spectacle, the secondary market is the best option at the moment. On Friday, tickets were available on TicketClub for as little as $1,500, with no additional fees. StubHub’s least expensive ticket was $1,716 (after $290 in fees), while VividSeats were $1,725 ($345 in fees). Ticketmaster resale’s best bargain was the lone secondary market ticket still over the $2,000 price point, coming in at $2,109 with $394 in fees. Tickets starting at $2,500 (plus fees) are also available from Ticketmaster in the primary marketplace.

The problem for families who suddenly find themselves with a large fortune is knowing whom to trust when planning for financial unknowns, like the semi-bust of the Eagle Ford. And, as expected, the Wall Street salespeople who entered the scene and sold many annuities when all this started, have found new and better sites, adds Baumgarten.

“A financial advisor who is a fiduciary – a person or organization that owes to another the duties of good faith and trust – is normally a better source of investment information than the sales force,” says Baumgarten. “Fiduciaries are bound legally and ethically to a higher level of responsibility and to always look out for their client’s best interest.”

Baumgarten gives a few warnings when considering financial investments:

  • Beware of storytelling where only positive attributes are illustrated. Everything has a downside. Those representatives who don’t really disclose the negatives aren’t really telling the truth, even when everything they say is factual. It’s what they leave out that’s important.
  • Beware of get-rich-quick-schemes and brother-in-law deals. The struggling brother-in-law is likely not struggling for lack of good opportunity. Behavior and choices dictate outcomes. Helping him with his get-rich-quick scheme in which he owns all the upside if it works, and you own the downside if it does not, is generally a terrible idea, and it makes Thanksgiving terribly awkward.
  • Beware of concepts involving trading or speculating. This could be day trading, commodity trading, hedge funds, or betting on the newest biotech drug that purportedly does wonders. The music may stop with you.
  • Beware of pitches for high-commission products. This is often a seemingly “no-lose” annuity pitch or life insurance, or indexed annuity concept. These are typically high-commission products which normally pay the representative generously up front. These get even more expensive when you try to unwind them, often triggering taxes and/or large penalties. The tax deferral offered is rarely as magical as it originally sounded. Additionally, loans on insurance cash value can be made to seem miraculous, but may create a hellish scenario when one lives longer than expected.

“The reality is that for investors with large portfolios, there are few investments worse than an annuity,” says Baumgarten. “Estate taxes on annuities can be particularly awful when couples have more than $11 million in joint assets. However, each investor’s situation is different and this overview may not apply to everyone. Seek wise counsel.”
