Successful Case of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Treated With Purified Umbilical Cord Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

BANGKOK, THAILAND – 16 Aug, 2017 – Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an inflammatory mediated autoimmune disorder which forms a part of a spectrum of connective tissue disorders, which can often attack any or many organ systems, involving joints, skin, kidneys, lungs, brain, etc. Genetics and environmental factors can influence the incidence of disease.  Connective tissue diseases can be present in several members of a family, or an underlying propensity can be exposed by environmental factors such as drugs, infections, and solar radiation.

Currently there is no known cure, and treatment relies on anti-inflammatories and immunosuppressants, long-term use of which carry significant morbidity. Estimated mortality is 6.8% with the most frequent predictors being active SLE, thromboses, and infections, respectively.

The Patient:

JM is a 26 year old lady who was diagnosed with Sjogren’s and SLE via 1997 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) guidelines at the age of 13 years old.  She has several family members with Connective Tissue Disorder diagnoses.  She has cycled through various anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressants over the years with limited efficacy.  Thirteen years after diagnosis, JM attended Intellihealth Plus clinic in Bangkok, Thailand for mesenchymal stem cell therapy.  The following laboratory results were obtained:  positive ds-DNA, positive ANA, positive RF.  Using ACR criteria, the following were met: malar rash, photosensitivity, nonerosive arthritis, pericarditis, mild hemolytic anemia with reticulocytosis, immunologic disorder (positive ds-DNA), and positive ANA.  Medications before treatment include:  Plaquenil, methocarbamol, klonopin, imuran, trazodone, prozac, etodolac, synthroid, prilosec.  

A multidisciplined integrative medicine treatment protocol was designed using 100M mesenchymal stem cells  delivered intravenously, and GcMAF intramuscularly, in combination with vitamin D3/calcium supplementation. The mesenchymal stem cells were delivered in four injections of 25M each over 3 weeks.  The treatment protocol was tolerated well without complications and patient returned to the U.S. to follow up with her primary physicians and rheumatologist.  JM reported improvement in multijoint pain and stiffness at approximately 3 months and began tapering off medications.  All medications were discontinued by month eight without complication; JM reported complete resolution of all symptoms.  The post treatment laboratory results obtained were: centromere Ab, histone Ab, ds-DNA Ab, JO Ab, RNA Ab, Smith Ab, SCL Ab, SSA Ab, SSB Ab all negative.  JM is approximately one year status post treatment, off all medications, and continues to remain symptom free.  Repeated laboratory analyses are negative.  JM has since become pregnant and looks forward to a normal lifestyle in the future.  

Treatment:

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are pluripotent progenitor cell lines that are able to differentiate into specialized cell types through mitosis such as: cartilage, bone, and connective tissue, etc.  Mesenchymal stem cells have also been demonstrated to affect T and B lymphocytes, natural killer, and antigen presenting cells. 

MSCs have anti-inflammatory properties but are hypo-immunogenic with low major histocompatibility complex. They do not, therefore, require HLA 3 testing, thus making mesenchymal stem cells safe for administration.  Several sites have been used to harvest MSC’s including, bone marrow, brain, and adipose tissue.

The umbilical cord derived purified mesenchymal stem cells used for treatment were obtained from Stem Cells 21 Ltd. in Thailand which utilises a five step process for 1st pass culturing to ensure maximal numbers of young, metabolically active cells: 

GcMAF is a serum glycoprotein which can be converted by beta-galactosidase of B cells and sialidase of T cells to a potent macrophage activating factor (MAF) 5.  Macrophage is responsible for detecting, engulfing and destroying pathogens.

Summary:

Systemic lupus erythematosus is an inflammatory mediated autoimmune disease which oftens severely limits the patient’s activities of daily living (ADL) through fatigue, arthritis, pain, and multiple organ impairment.  Curative therapies for SLE have been elusive to date, making chronic immunosuppressive therapy with its associated long term side effects, problematic.  To our knowledge, this is the first SLE case to show clinical and laboratory remission after therapy using mesenchymal stem cells and GcMAF.  The combination of MSC with GcMAF has three main advantages:

1. Mild immunosuppression

2. Robust anti-inflammatory effects.

3. Repair of damaged cell lines.

Mesenchymal stem cell therapy with GcMAF is well tolerated with minimal potential complications.  Our patient had no complications or side effects of therapy, and clinical and diagnostic improvement has been sustained for approximately one year. Additional research should help shed light on whether MSC and GcMAF therapy will show a consistent pattern of disease reversal over time.

He completed his internship at Bellevue Hospital and completed his fellowship in Hematology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute in 1963.  Dr. Stone completed his residency in Internal Medicine from Bellevue Hospital in 1961 and Residency in Psychiatry from Columbia/ NY State Psychiatric Institute in 1966.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Stone has been active in his community and recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the mental health care profession. He has received many awards, accolades’ and has been featured in numerous publications and magazines such as Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America numerous years in a row, Marquis Who’s Who, Strathmore Who’s Who, American Registry, named Outstanding Professional of the Year for 2016, recipient of the Lifetime Service Award and for 2017 Top Psychiatrist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals.  He was the host of Discovery Channel’s TV series “Most Evil,” where he interviewed men and women who had committed various sorts of murder and other extreme acts.  He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, affiliated with the Psychopathological Association of America, American Academy of Psychoanalysts, the American College of Psychiatrists, the Royal College of Psychologists, the International Society of Personality Disorders, and the National Association of Forensic Counselors.  He is also a member of the London Reform Club and the Medical Strollers of NY City.

Aside from his successful career in mental health, Dr. Stone has also been a sought after lecturer, speaker and author.  He has given lectures and speeches all around the world on every level and on every topic imaginable having to do with mental health. He has also authored a number of professional articles and publications, including “The Borderline Syndromes,” “The Fate of Borderline Patients,” “Treating Schizophrenic Patients,” and “The Anatomy of Evil.”

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – 16 Aug, 2017 – A businessman, author, entrepreneur and an intellectual…but also a romantic, an idealist, a poet, and a man with vision, Riccardo Giovanni has been working for the last decade or so on bringing together the best qualities of two cities that he loves, Boston and Rio de Janeiro.

These are not two cities that you often read about in the same sentence. Though with the Olympic bid of one, the hosting of the event in the other and the rapid change of both, going forward there may be fine-tooth combing through of the traits and personalities of both cities.

Having launched Iloverio.com just before the Olympics, Riccardo celebrated the biggest website in the world about a city with the seriousness and solemnity of a Bostonian ritual, when with a few key city leaders the “I Love Rio” brand was projected onto Christ the Redeemer, the first time in the history that something like this was ever allowed.

“We didn’t want this ceremony to be a party” said Giovanni, “I think that would have been out of place for what our work is meant to achieve.”

Riccardo, who is originally from Milan, lives in Rio de Janeiro but often travels to Boston to exchange ideas and clear his mind.

“In fact, I came up with the idea for I Love Rio in Boston, in Jamaica Plain actually. I was sitting in JP Licks, in the winter of 2006, drinking hot coffee and watching the snow fall.”

Rio de Janeiro is well known for being a tourist destination, for the beaches, the nature and of course Carnival… but Riccardo wanted to show that the city and the Carioca culture is also well worth of scrutiny. Thus, he created a touristic/cultural portal explaining how all the elements that form the city came to develop and merge culturally, and offering links to hundreds of books, academic papers and scientific studies about Rio.

“Boston as a whole has an unmatched academic environment,” says Riccardo who had studied English in a summer program at Simmons, learning the language very quickly, and later graduating in Business Management and Engineering at Boston University. “You can have people sitting at the same table whose countries of origin may be at war.  And yet they will be working on the same group project just fine. On the academic side, Boston has a kind of almost Utopian energy. It makes you believe world peace is possible.  It is what I love the most about Beantown. It is just incredible.”

This statement may be surprising for some people who at times see a lot of division in the world, reading worrisome news day after day.

“Similarly, as a foreigner in both countries, in Rio de Janeiro I see an amazing syncretism and integrated multi-culturalism that I have only seen in few other places.  For example, in Rio there are many Asians and many Italians, but there is no Chinatown or Little Italy, everyone lives together and mixes no matter where they are from. I find it so interesting.”

I asked Mr. Giovanni what he wanted to do next about this relationship between Boston and Rio.

He paused, and then almost as if he did not want to reveal his aspiration lowered his voice and shrugged, “Sister Cities? I would love to see that happen. Rio and Boston seem so different, so culturally and geographically distant, yet in their own ways they have achieved something phenomenal that the whole world really needs. To me, bringing attention to these values seem the right thing to do. Especially in our times, and it would even open new cultural and economic channels both ways.”

“Boston is probably the most important academic place in the world where people from everywhere mix and cooperate naturally under an educational umbrella. Rio, as the former capital of an empire and of a republic has been welcoming and integrating citizens of dozens of countries for over two hundred years. We can build on this. We can really build on this.”

More comfortable with talking about the idea he continued, “I brought what I learned from Boston in terms of the serious academic and business culture to Rio de Janeiro, and that was one of the keys to the success of the I Love Rio project. Are the Cariocas excited about it?  Yes, very! They let me put our Symbol on their most important national icon… not much more I can add to that!”

“When I mention this idea of a sisterhood in Rio to the people and to the leaders of the city, they love it.  Cariocas are very passionate people and very positive people.  If you want to talk about something negative they generally will not argue with you, they will just find a polite excuse to walk away. Confrontation and criticism is not in their nature. But when you approach Cariocas with a conversation about mixing ideas and coming-up with something new, well this is how your get them interested. This is how you get their famous Brazilian smile. Bossa Nova was born this way.”

NYC Chiropractor Dr. Perna Obtains Gold Standard in Sports Fitness Certification

NEW YORK CITY, NY – 16 Aug, 2017 – Dr David Perna DC, CSCS, CCSP of Back and Body Medical in New York City has recently obtained the highest certification level to prepare athletes to get back into shape following an injury. The Certification Strength Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) is a crucial qualification because it enables Dr Perna to establish programs that will improve recovery, maintain fitness levels, and identify areas of workout mechanics that may lead to future injury.

The qualification is extremely difficult to obtain, as it requires continual study with a certain number of credits to be completed each year to maintain the CSCS status. It is generally a qualification that sports physical therapists,  athletic trainers, and quite rare for a chiropractors to have it too.

As such, Dr Perna’s existing CCSP (Certified Chiropractic Sports Practitioner) qualification dovetails perfectly with the CSCS qualification. Low cost of living, affordable healthcare, sunny climate, and a gentler pace of life are among the reasons Mexico and others on the top ten list are nominated for retiree consideration.

A recent Boomer / neXt survey of Boomers and older Gen Xers found the appeal of an overseas retirement has captured the imagination of millions of Americans in their fifties and sixties: over four-in-ten respondents (42%) agreed that “sometimes I think I could leave the United States and live elsewhere in retirement.”

The firm also found important demographic variations in willingness to think about leaving the U.S. and spending one’s retirement years in another country.

  • Men are significantly more likely than women to consider leaving (48% versus 36%), especially younger Boomer men (54%).
  • At 37%, the number of older (leading-edge) Boomers aged 62-71 who would consider an overseas retirement is already impressive, but among younger (trailing-edge) Boomers, aged 53-61 and Gen Xers aged 50-52 interest is even higher – 44% and 52% respectively
  • Boomers in households with six-figure incomes are also much more likely than average to say they could think about becoming expat retirees (54%).
  • Educational level also plays a role: respondents with a college education are somewhat more likely than those with less education to harbor thoughts of retiring abroad, 47% versus 39%.

According to consumer trend-tracker Barry Robertson, Partner at Boomer / neXt, the survey findings bear out Boomer history. “Starting in the sixties, whether it was the nobility of volunteerism in the Peace Corps, the Beatles and the British Invasion or the exotic locations of the Bond movies, Boomers became increasingly willing to grab their backpacks and head for the friendly skies,” he said.

“When the Cold War ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, travel-savvy Boomer-yuppies were primed to take American businesses global, and U.S. passport ownership soared from 7 million that year to almost 50 million by 2000,” he added.

“By the nineties, Boomer parents were already introducing their Millennial kids to trips way beyond Disney World and were including international destinations as well,” Robertson noted, “resulting in travel becoming a way of life for many young Americans today.”

Just how widely Boomers opened the door to travel among younger generations is evidenced by industry authority Skift, whose researchers estimated 2015 student and Millennial expenditures at $200 billion versus $120 billion by travelers aged 50+.

Among the intrepid was a 53 year-old man, who said that Panama was in his sights: “I’ve been there on vacation, and I loved it.  I think it would be a great place to enjoy my retirement years.”  Another man in his mid-60s remarked that “I don’t want to see my assets run out.  My mother lived to be 95, and I’m in good health.  I’m open to finding a place with a low cost of living and a high quality of life, outside our country.”

Despite willingness to give living abroad a good, hard look, the Boomer / neXt survey also found some who like the concept would have trouble actually pulling the trigger on such a big step. 

“I could do it, but I would miss my grandchildren terribly,” says a 65 year-old woman who figures on retiring within the next two years.  “I’d love to spend all my days on the beach,” remarks a 52 year-old full-time worker, “but what about crime?  We think it’s bad [in the U.S.], but it’s worse everywhere else.”  On the other hand, a retired 70 year-old male says “I’ve been to Mexico on vacation a dozen times or so in my life, and you know what?  I don’t think the transition would be all that difficult for me.  I speak Spanish pretty well, and El Norte wouldn’t be all that far away.”

The Boomer/neXt Survey of respondents between the ages of 50 and 71 was conducted online from March 29-31 by esearch.com. Five hundred and ten respondents were interviewed via a representative survey, which corresponds to a margin of error of plus or minus four percent at the 95% level of confidence.  Confidence levels among certain subgroups from the sample may have a higher margin of error.
