Melbourne builders start open dialogue with consumers

A Melbourne building firm is starting an open dialogue with consumers in a bid to help improve the sector’s reputation. Roda Developments was established in 2006 and prides itself on an ethos of deep building knowledge as well as a shared vision of personalised client service, integrity, and high quality workmanship.

However, numerous inquiries into the building industry over recent years has shown scores of disputes between consumers and building practitioners, which has prompted the Melbourne-based firm to act.

An Auditor-General inquiry in 2015 found that disputes were rife within the Victorian domestic building industry, with 28 per cent of people who engage tradespeople to help them build or renovate their home experiencing problems.

The most common problem, accounting for 63 per cent of complaints, was poor workmanship.

“Like any industry, unfortunately there are good and bad operators and the bad ones seem to get all the press coverage,” Roda Developments co-director Rob Romanella said.

“We pride ourselves on more than adecade of quality workmanship and a number of happy clients so we decided that starting an open dialogue with consumers could be a way of promoting the myriad positives in our industry.”

Co-directors Rob Romanella and David Maiolowere brought together as carpenters on some of Melbourne’s largest developments and both have a long family history in the building industry.

Together with cutting-edge Melbourne production company GLUE Content, Roda Developments has developed an #AskRODA video initiative that will feature both directors answering questions directly from consumers as well as the most common consumer queries.

Mr Maiolo said the monthly videos would create a direct communication between builders and consumers, with no questions off the table.

“Some consumers can find talking to builders intimidating, but we want to showcase that there are many professionals out there who will happily provide you with honest and upfront information about our sector,” Mr Maiolo said.

“We all want an industry we can be proud of – and we already have a sector that is filled with professional operators like us – but perhaps there is more work that can be done.”

Some of the most common questions that consumers ask and Roda Developments will answer include:

* What happens if a builder goes bankrupt?
* What are five things you should ask your builder?What happens if you change your mind during a build?
* What are the main causes of delays?
* What warranties do builders offer?
* What maintenance is included after handover?

The 5th Annual A Taste of Theater Festival – October 6th and 7th, 2017

August 11th, 2017: Art lovers are being asked to mark their calendars for October 6th and 7th, 2017 for A Taste Of Theater’s 5th annual theatre festival! The event brings playwrights together from different parts of the country to showcase one scene from one of theirplays. Audience members will vote for which play they like most and offer feedback.

“The playwrights showcased in the festival are synonymous to movie previews or trailers where the public is provided with insight about the movie which they intend to see,” said Victor Gulley, owner and founder of A Taste of Theater. “We allow the playwrights to give the audience a ‘taste’ of their play.”

R&B singer, RES, will perform her hit “For Who You Are,” and the audience will be invited toline dance with Dawn Avery’s “Dancing Deeva’s.”

A Taste of Theater will also host a seminar, “Acting With the Stars,” where up-and-coming actors perform a reading from a Hollywood movie with an actor from thatfilm. “Acting With the Stars” is a training and coaching environment where professionals advise up-and-coming actors on ways to enhance their craft.

                          

The festival will be held at the Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep: 250 E. 111th Street, Chicago, IL. 60628.  Doors open at 6 p.m. Play showcase begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, and can be purchased at www.atasteoftheater.com and at the door.

Miami, FL, USA (August 11, 2017) — An emblematic piece initiates the path throughout the exhibition “Variations on the same Subjects: People, Nature and Geometry” presented by Contemporary Art Projects USA and hosted by the ArtsPark @ Hollywood, FL. A large painting by the artist Juan Luis Perez, who was born in Cuba and lives in Miami, FL, Sombras de mi Pasado (Shadows of my Past) Illusions Series, is shown at the entrance of the space. Why? …because this artwork merges several concepts of the overall exhibition, in the intellectual, the creative and the technical ambits. As a curator, I believe that every artist is a communicator, who translates his/her own experience to the current moment in order to state his/her beliefs and messages to the present viewer, as well as to the future generations that later will contemplate the work. This particular artwork has figurative, abstract and geometric elements, creating connections with the natural, the human and the architectonical. Then, each artist is by talent and vocation an innovator, which does not mean that they would not use previous influences or inspiration by other artists. But, the important point, as it is for this artwork and for the artist in the exhibition, everyone is, and must be at the end, unique and original. Finally, any technique used has to be excellent and well managed. Well, I live now the artist to speak by his own. Juan Luis Perez says: “I consider myself away from trends. I create guided by my truest inspiration from total freedom of choice. Completely self-taught, I don’t believe in academic dogmas or market claims. I change style as if changing clothes. Art is passion, fun, great adventure. I use acrylic, oil, charcoal, graphite, resins, gesso, alcohol, and newspapers sheets, love monochromatic tones, rough or dynamic strokes, turning the spatula in my work’s biggest protagonist. I returned to my roots, expressing a traditions’ rich culture filled with energy from pure imagination. My interest revolves around human beings and their conflicts. My works are profound social portraits of a generation. I’m concerned in cultural dialogues between East and West, societies which, despite their differences, belong to the same condition: human.” – “…I use truth and fantasy bringing the viewer a sense of purpose, passion, realism as well as a timeless feel. Through abstract expressions I aim to achieve the emotional compass humanity reveals in all phases of life as a poetic evolution. With every stroke of the brush and a lyrical composition of visual effects I create a dramatic transformation of old and new …a profound connection to express the visuals of my soul.” – “I try to be unique in my own individual way, my work is a fusion of all my lived experiences and skills & techniques gathered over the years, combined to bring a personal expression of energy and a message to myself with a personal stamp that not even I can duplicate. Sometimes, I depict sceneries of natural culture with organic resources such as burlap, tree seeds, bark, raw rope, yarn to express what is available rather than what’s academic. However, from my early childhood Sandro Botticelli was the culprit of my love for visual art, and as a college student, José María Mijares, a Cuban vanguard artist of the San Alejandro School of Arts, was a personal friend and mentor in my beginnings. As I matured in my process, Antoni Tapies as well as Julian Schnabel became my greatest influences. The process of my work differs between installations, sculptures, and paintings. I can start my paintings several pieces at once and employ layers over a period of days. Sometimes I set them aside and finish months later, as they come complete in my mind and eyes. Others are finished rather fast, as I love the turnout of the accidents discovered in the process that then become as a rationalized finish. There are three key elements that separate free Caribbean and Latin American art from socially restrained Cuba and its artists: 1) A primary distinction for Cuban Art is the cultural inheritance of the Afro-Cuban culture and strong Spaniard influence; 2) The diverse level of creativity due to its social lack of resources elevates its inventiveness and passion for expression; 3) The inability to speak out in freedom promotes a more intense visual message.” To conclude, as in this exhibit every artist comes from a different place, background and experience, each artwork will communicate its own message to the public.

A certified Nutritionist and Ayurvedic Practitioner, he led thousands across the country through the program and has since created a new diet specific effort in partnership with American Heart Association®/Empowered To Serve™ called “The 40 Day Turn Up”.  

“Our efforts to reduce obesity, lower hypertension, and empower people to adapt to sustainable healthy lifestyles was a great success that exceeded our expectations,” states Williams. “100 people lost more than 1500 pounds in 40 days. GFA Relief Team Links with Temple Leaders to Help Flood-Hit Buddhist Community

WILLS POINT, TEXAS – 11 Aug, 2017 – Gospel for Asia-supported (GFA) workers worked alongside Buddhist priests to bring relief to some of those worst hit by the severe flooding that left thousands of Sri Lankans in desperate need. 

GFA founder and director Dr. K.P. Yohannan was among the GFA team members who helped deliver supplies to families in the south Indian Ocean island nation—official religion Buddhism—where flood waters as high as 18 feet submerged homes and destroyed crops.

In association with leaders and trainee priests at the local Buddhist temple, the GFA-supported group distributed relief packages containing rice, meat, sugar and spices, as well as matches and candles and toiletries. 

“We were grateful to be able to join forces to offer practical help to people in such a time of need,” said Yohannan. “We welcome the opportunity to work with anyone and everyone who wants to help the poor and needy. When disaster strikes, as it has in Sri Lanka, what matters most is for everyone to come together and try to help.

“In all these situations, there is one question the local people keep asking us: why are we doing this? Our answer always remains the same. It is because of the love of Christ.” 

One of the Buddhist leaders expressed appreciation for the aid distribution, noting that it demonstrated “there is no division of race, caste or religion, but that everyone can join together as one to help.” A local community leader said that the visitors were the first Christian group to offer help in the predominantly Buddhist area, while another called the distribution “a great act of kindness.”

GFA-supported teams have been widely active in relief efforts since Sri Lanka was hit by bad flooding in May. Landslides triggered by heavy rain left many communities cut off and without power. Around 200 people died, and many thousands were left homeless and without food, fresh water, or a source of income. Since then, parts of the country have also been affected by drought.

GFA-supported “compassion teams” have taken fresh food and water, medical and cooking supplies, clothing and bedding to some of the most affected communities. They have also helped clean wells and repair pumps to provide fresh water.

“Sri Lanka continues to need our prayers, and our help,” said Yohannan. “We hope that through both, people will come to know God’s love and care for them in this difficult time.”
