46% of post-9/11 veterans reported that it took longer than expected to find employment. And these are just the veterans who participated in the survey! I can only imagine how the results would look like if all veterans reported their honest answers.

After nearly a decade as a traditional financial advisor, I am reshaping how financial planning and financial advice for the military works. Bold statement, I know! The truths I discovered while floundering through my own transition from the military drove me to reevaluate everything I thought I knew as a financial advisor, and now I want to share what I have learned; not just within my industry, but with everyone who plays a part in the military-to-civilian transition process.  

Veterans are struggling. I had reached the level of success I hoped for as a Veteran, but I still wasn’t happy; in fact, I was miserable. It took me years to realize that despite the outward evidence of my success, I was struggling to find meaning in my post-military career.  And I wasn’t alone.  According to the Blue Star Families Survey, the stats around Veteran Transition are unsettling:

– 46% of post-9/11 veterans reported that it took longer than expected to find employment. 

– 47% of post-9/11 veterans reported they are not working in their preferred career field. 

– 34% find it difficult to establish a sense of purpose, value, or meaning in post-military life. 

And these are just the veterans who participated in the survey! I can only imagine how the results would look like if all veterans reported their honest answers. 

I take a lot of pride in the work I have done as a financial advisor over the last decade, but I also discovered that something was missing from the standard financial planning process. It wasn’t enough to help my military and veteran clients make a budget, invest, and save money. Sure, I helped them prepare to be financially secure later in their lives, but I wasn’t doing anything to help them with a much more immediate challenge: how to maximize their opportunities as they transitioned out of the military and back into civilian life.
