Singapore entrepreneur Elaine Zhou.
In an exclusive interview with Singapore based entrepreneur Elaine Zhou, she was candidly asked about her personal experiences and the advice she has for up and coming entrepreneurs.
Below is the transcript of the conversation with her:
On staying competitive and motivated.
“People often ask – how do you consistently stay competitive and motivated? It is a tough question for me to answer. I grew up in a humble and loving family. Our family wasn’t rich. In fact, my parents have been working diligently in the farm for as long as I could remember, simply to support the family. They taught me the spirit of hard work, can-do and perseverance, and that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. These are the qualities that I have embraced in my life till today. Especially through the most challenging of times, they helped me stay the course.”
On being a female entrepreneur.
“I was born in China and moved to Singapore when I was twenty-one year old for an internship. English was not my first language; I did not speak English at all. It was really tough and I was working really hard at my job as a Human Resource Assistant. I am very grateful for the wonderful people in my life who taught me important lessons, who cared and supported me. They include my bosses, colleagues, friends, business partners and mentors.
Being a woman entrepreneur requires tremendous amounts of courage, sacrifice and resilience. I failed twice in my early business ventures – They were painful. Looking back in hindsight, however, I’ve come to appreciate every single experience I have had. I realized along the way that I was the single biggest barrier; the biggest obstacle that prevented me from achieving my best. I had to keep fighting in what I believed in, and to keep learning and growing. The most fulfilling and rewarding experience is to see other people grow, to observe how they change and transform their lives, and to see how they help people around them to do the same. In the process of helping and developing people, I learn the most.
Because of self-limiting beliefs, I was not even aware that I have to grow. I don’t know how to grow myself. Only when I am seriously investing and focusing on my personal growth do I discover that I am actually the one fully responsible in shaping the experiences in my life. With help from my mentors and coaches, I’ve been intentional in continual self-improvement. I’ve come to realise I am the one in absolute power to set my life’s directions. Some people say age comes with wisdom, I don’t believe that is true. Sometimes age comes alone. If you want to grow and become the person you want to be, you’ve got to be intentional.
Mark Cole, CEO of John Maxwell Co, once said, ‘Life is sum of the people you met and the experiences you have.’ And the decisions we make shape the lives we lead today.
We have absolute power determining what we want in our life and the sort of experiences we want to shape.”
Growth and realizations – Elaine’s mission.
“As I get older, I realized I want to spend my time with the people I love and enjoy. I don’t put up with as much as I once did. I realized I have the choice to surround myself with people who are positive, happy and passionate, and I have little desire to waste time trying to fulfill other people’s agendas.
I am passionate about helping people grow. I love people and I love seeing people grow. I want to invest in people who desire to grow; those who want to make a difference in the lives of others. For people who don’t want to grow or change, they have my love, they have my heart, but they don’t have my time.
My mission is to bring peace, joy, and happiness to as many people as I possibly could. The philosophy and vision I am practicing and spreading is to share knowledge that is true, simple, and practical; something that will transform people’s lives.
I always believe that life should not be made overly complicated; what we give we gain in other forms. When I am clear with my inner self, my life shifts in the most amazing ways. There are so many wonders and miracles coming into my life. The innermost belief for everyone I have worked with is always this, ‘I am not good enough!’ Why? According to whose standards? If this belief is strong in you, how can you possibly create a loving, joyous, prosperous, healthy life?
I shared a lot of my personal stories and those of my clients’ in my recent book You Can Create Your Life. One challenge many people face is the lack of clarity; not knowing the specifics, not knowing what you really want. Because many of us lead very busy lives, we don’t really sit down and think what we are doing, or to turn to people for support, even though they are the ones who will really support us.
Self-approval and self-acceptance are the main keys to positive change in every area of our lives. Try unconditionally accepting yourself and see what happens. All the top performers in the world; Tony Robbins, John Maxwell, Richard Branson, Elon Mask, Oprah Winfrey, the list goes on, all of them have one thing in common; they know how to master their minds. They are able to use their minds to create what they want in life and to live abundantly and rich spiritually, mentally and financially. Many of them come from under privileged backgrounds. If they can do it, you can do it too. It is all about learning how to do it.”
The Journey to Spiritual Awakening
“The universe unconditionally supports us in every thought we choose to think and believe. And the Universe responds to every thought you have; what you believe in, it comes into reality. We shape our belief system as little kids, and then we move through life creating experiences to match our beliefs. Looking back into your own life journey, notice how often you have gone through the same experiences? Because I believe in the simple truth of connecting with our Source, Inner Self and Being, I made the decision to write the book You Can Create Your Life to share the message with the world, a message that so many people need to hear.
So often we forget our rootedness in Being, our divine reality, and lose ourselves in the world. Confusion, anger, depression, violence, and conflicts arise when human forget who we are. The earlier we discover and connect with our inner self, the better experiences we will have in areas concerning relationships, career, business and personal fulfilment. As a professional coach, speaker and mentor, both personally and professionally, I believe there is no greater joy than seeing others blossom, grow and reach their untapped potential.
George Bernard Shaw once said, ‘Progress is impossible without change. And those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.’
No matter what goes on in our lives, and whether we know it or not, we’re being divinely guided. If you’re ready to align yourself with your highest calling and to manifest the life that you desire, this book will provide you with the tools to fulfilling your true potential.
You are the creator and co-creator of your reality.”
