February Business For Sale Transactions Down Slightly From January Says BizBen Index

DUBLIN, CA – 18 Mar, 2017 – California business for sale transactions were down slightly in February compared to the previous month. The number of business for sale transactions in February was 1,373 compared to the 1,378 that were completed in January it was reported by the BizBen Index. The number of transactions completed so far this year are down 4% compared to the first two months of 2016.

“The fact that business for sale transactions are down this year compared to last shouldn’t be too much of a surprise,” said Peter Siegel, MBA, Founder and President of BizBen.com, parent of the BizBen Index.

Siegel continued, “Last year was a record year. We haven’t seen that number of transactions since 2008. Frankly, I wasn’t sure we would see numbers like we had in 2008 again given the way the economy and lending practices have changed since the Great Recession. I think the fact that sales are relatively flat compared to last year isn’t necessarily a bad thing.”

Other reasons for the slight decline according to Siegel, might be related to the uncertainty of future tax policy coming out of Washington and whether or not the Fed would raise interest rates in March.

Siegel explains, “While the people on Wall Street seem to be pretty confident that President Trump will be able to push through the tax reform he wants, potential buyers may not be as confident and that may be causing some hesitation. On the flip side, sellers may be holding off on selling waiting to see if they can save money if and when the President’s tax cuts come to fruition. However, given that the fundamentals of the economy look strong I expect sales to remain strong throughout the year.”

Among large California Counties reporting a growth in the sale of small and mid-market businesses last month are Los Angeles County with 387 transactions up from 365, Orange County posting 144 completed business transfers last month compared with 123 in February and San Francisco County with 61 last month compared to 51 the previous month.

City of Deltona Dedicates Lakeshore Loop Trail

DELTONA, FL – 18 Mar, 2017 – The City of Deltona dedicated its new walking and bicycling trail on a bright and brisk morning on March 15th.  The City Commission and staff hosted the outdoor dedication ceremony at the edge of the historic tree canopy that shadows the Lakeshore Loop Trail. 

Mayor John Masiarczyk welcomed the more than fifty invited guests who represented Volusia County, neighboring municipalities, chambers of commerce, environmental and historical groups as well as eco-tourism organizations.  They and local area residents were on hand to witness as the City and its project partners officially opened the ten foot wide concrete pathway with the snip of a ribbon that spanned the width of the Trail. 

The Lakeshore Loop Trail is almost a mile in length, following the north shore of Lake Monroe, as it links the City’s Thornby Park to the County’s Green Springs Park.  These two nature-based parks are located on the longer County River2Sea trail, and the new Lakeshore Loop Trail will provide visitors to take a detour along the Lake Monroe shoreline. 

While on the trail, the main sensory experience will be nature based.  A majority of the trail is under the centuries old oak tree canopy that lines the north shore of one of the largest lakes in central Florida, Lake Monroe.  And the wildlife in the canopy includes many birds on the life-lists of avid and casual birders. 

Safety and comfort for visitors was a key goal with the trail design.  Two new footbridges in the Trail span natural drainage canals, additionally the construction of the trail walkway was modified to ensure the historic palm and oak trees would not be adversely affected. 

The Lakeshore Loop Trail cost $630,000 with the funds coming from Volusia County and the State.  Planning began almost three years ago, and construction started in October 2016.

DELTONA, FL – 18 Mar, 2017 – The City of Deltona will soon be the home of the new Veterans Administration Clinic, relocating from Orange City, on the western side of Interstate 4.  The new clinic will be located in Deltona Plaza, at 1200 Deltona Boulevard, and will occupy more than ten thousand five hundred square feet of office space.  The lease with the Veterans Administration was signed in February, after several years of site searching in southwest Volusia County. 

The clinic will be housed in one wing on the northern side of one of Deltona’s largest shopping center, and the clinic site will be re-engineered to meet the specific needs of this new medical facility.  There will be 27 employees to assist and help the four thousand six hundred veterans who visit the clinic… and the staff includes six primary care providers, two psychiatrists and a psychologist.  The increased staff size will also allow the clinic to utilize telehealth clinics, like teledermatology.  Telehealth is a collection of methods and means for enhancing health care and public health and support, using telecommunications technologies. 

The VA attempts to provide primary care and mental health services within 30 miles or 30 minutes of where the Veteran resides.  The importance of a clinic located in the Deltona/Orange City area is that it will provide these services to veterans in that area.  The Veterans Administration’s current patient population has been increasing so with the additional space at the new clinic the VA will have the capability to serve more veterans in the Deltona/Orange City area.

Deltona Plaza is located in the Deltona’s Community Redevelopment Area (CRA), the Southeast Deltona CRA.  This is a major boost in the City’s medical investment procurement and a great service and convenience to our veterans and the veterans in southwest Volusia County.

City and Residents Join to Clean Local Lakes

DELTONA, FL – 18 Mar, 2017 – Earlier in March, the City of Deltona’s Public Works Department sponsored the City’s 9th Annual Lake Clean-up… targeting specific “chain of lake” locations throughout Deltona.  The Department’s Stormwater Management Division oversees the yearly program’s operations… as part of Division’s objective of educating the public about the importance of maintaining the State of Florida’s clean, unpolluted surface water. 

The biggest factor in this program’s continued success is the involvement of the residents of Deltona.  Each year, volunteers are recruited to be the main workforce in this often messy and unglamorous manual labor.  While the City provides gloves, garbage bags and other trash collection tools, the residents supply the manpower.  This year there were fifteen volunteers, and they spread their efforts among four lake shorelines, to clean up the lake banks, lake beds, and the near-shore shallow water areas. 

This year’s clean-up started at 9:30 in the morning, and by the time the trash and debris pick-up ended in the early afternoon, almost ten acres of freshwater shoreline had been scoured clean.  And the residents collected more than seven hundred and twenty gallons of garbage and trash… and several yards of carpeting, several discarded buckets and large storage bins, as well as an abandoned bicycle frame.  

Several of these citizen volunteers have assisted in previous Annual Lake Clean-ups during its nine year history, and they do so because they see this program and themselves as part of the bigger solution.  These residents know how important it is to protect the environment and the State’s surface waters from pollutants, whether it’s plastic trash or toxic fluids.  They understand whether the discarded trash made its way into the waterways and lakes by intent or accident, it is critical that everyone make the deliberate choice to protect Florida’s lakes and streams.

DELTONA CITY MANAGER JANE SHANG RECEIVES CITIZEN OF THE YEAR HONOR

DELTONA, FL – 18 Mar, 2017 – Deltona City Manager Jane Shang was recognized for her work with the City by the Deltona Dreamkeepers during the 2017 Dr. Martin Luther King Weekend.  Ms. Shang received the Citizen of the Year Award, at the January 14th Annual Breakfast Celebration, for her outstanding work and contributions to the community in 2016.  

Additionally, the Volusia League of Cities selected Ms. Jane Shang to receive the group’s 2016 City Manager of the Year Award.  The League of Cities determines the recipient based upon outstanding leadership that makes their city and Volusia County a better place to live.

Ms. Shang was hired as the City Manager in June 2015, and launched the City’s beautification campaign, encouraging residents to improve their property by landscaping and following the City’s trash ordinances. 

Additionally, Ms. Shang has been instrumental in the progress of the City’s new Community Center, with the ground-breaking scheduled for January 26th, and a planned ribbon-cutting in December 2017.

Firefighter Awarded for Exceptional Duty

DELTONA, FL – 18 Mar, 2017 – Earlier in 2017, the Deltona Fire Department recognized numerous firefighters for outstanding service through the past year.  One firefighter was awarded the Exceptional Duty award, for her dedication and work in the Deltona community during the holiday season.  Lt. Christine Gallagher was instrumental in the success of the Fire Department’s traditional food and toy drive, Deltona Operation Cares. 

This program began in 2014 and was able to provide food and gifts to five families with twenty-four children.  In 2016, that number of recipients increased to twenty-four families with eighty-one children who received toys and food.  The fire union provided the donations for the first year of the drive, and by 2016, Deltona Operation Cares expanded its base of donations to the City staff and the public. 

The 2016 drive kicked off during the Thanksgiving holiday with a 24 hour visit to Walmart by the pink firetruck.  Deltona Operation Cares also provided two car loads of bicycles and gifts to the Deltona Youth Explosion, which helped in assisting families.

In receiving her award, Lt. Gallagher was described as being “passionate, committed and dedicated in what she does and truly cares for the kids. The program has now become a tradition. She goes above and beyond giving selflessly of her time to make sure children of our community have a great Christmas.”

International Bus Driver Competition Comes to St. Louis; 25 Motorcoach Drivers Compete for Top Honors Feb. 28

Twenty-five professional motorcoach drivers compete for top honors in the first annual International Driver Competition in St. Louis at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. The 2017 United Motorcoach Association EXPO also features the biggest over the road passenger vehicle trade show in the U.S. and Canada. The show floor is sold out and features the latest vehicles from all leading motorcoach manufacturers.

ST. LOUIS, MO – Twenty-five of the nation’s top bus drivers are headed to St. Louis to compete in the first annual United Motorcoach Association (UMA) International Driver Competition at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February, 28, 2017. The top performing drivers will compete on a closed course located behind Paddy O’s Restaurant in downtown St. Louis. 
All participating drivers have a proven history of safe driving and many have won a championship in a state or regional competition to earn the right to compete in St. Louis at the UMA International Driver Competition. 

After a written examination testing their knowledge of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on Monday, motorcoach drivers will hit the course beginning at nine a.m. and cycle through a series of obstacles such as “Diminishing Lane,” “Offset Alley,” and “Parallel Parking.” 

“If you think parallel parking a car can be challenging, try a 45-foot-long, 102 inch wide, $600,000 luxury motorcoach,” said Dale Krapf, Chairman of Krapf Bus Companies and UMA.  “This exciting new event will showcase the drivers’ skills and professionalism as the public face of motorcoach operations. These drivers are proven champions in motorcoach safety.”    
This first of its kind international competition attracted entrants from 21 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces.  The UMA International Driver Competition champions will receive cash prizes, trophies, framed certificates, and recognition at the UMA Leadership Awards Celebration on February 28 in St. Louis.

The driver competition is part of UMA’s annual Motorcoach EXPO which features an exhibit hall showcasing the latest buses and motorcoaches, minibuses, and other commercial tour vehicles.  The EXPO takes place at the America’s Convention Center in downtown St. Louis, Feb. 26 – Mar. 2. In addition to the vehicles on display, there are educational and networking opportunities for operators of motorcoach companies. 

The first annual competition is sponsored by Prevost, Crum and Forster, Shriver-Capacity, and Bob Evans Restaurants.

The UMA Motorcoach Expo is the largest gathering of motorcoach operators in North America, bringing together nearly 2,000 bus and motorcoach industry professionals annually.
