Tulsa, OK, March 16, 2017: It was on the tall-grass prairie with its vast horizon, dramatic light and thousands of natural lakes that Patrick Adams came to love the landscape that would become the dominant subject of his work. Adams was born in the rural farming community of Worthington, MN in 1965. He went on to continue his education with a BA in studio art in Winona, MN and later a Master of Fine Arts in painting at the University of Kentucky.

Growing up in Minnesota, Patrick Adams could always see the horizon. He was so used to the flat midwestern landscape that he missed that consistent view of the earth meeting the sky upon his relocation to Kentucky. Adams found himself seeking any way to get above the trees in Appalachia, so he would drive and hike up to the bluffs that surrounded Lexington, Kentucky. These hikes deeply influence his current work and despite the difference in terrain, he has found that the final pieces are inspired by some of his earliest teachers at Winona State University and their love for tactile and layered abstract landscapes.

“My greatest inspiration is the phenomenon of light; it is the one thing we experience that is completely outside of time—light does not age. I see art as a focusing and sculpting of light,” says Adams. For the last twenty-five years, he has continued to hone his techniques in an attempt to capture the light and form of the landscape. Adams’ experimental methods of of overworking the canvas and building up the surface of his pieces through constant changes in direction, color, composition and manner of paint application give a new perspective of landscape painting for the viewer.

Patrick Adams’ fusion of current work is centered around human interaction with nature; it’s beauty in both the spiritual and physical realms. He utilizes diptych landscapes as a metaphor for uniting the human experience in the physical and spiritual worlds. Adams works to remind the audience that the natural world is not a backdrop to their lives, but resides at the very heart of it all. “I am trying desperately to convey a sense of majesty of the created world through the poetry of paint,” explains Adams. “I take that vocation very seriously.”
