The Demise of Another Business ‘Genius’ Leaves Many Clues

Leadership expert Dov Baron weighs in on the perennial business leadership question: Is genius not enough? It’s the topic of his latest column in Entrepreneur Magazine.

Today, business leaders face an unprecedented level of scrutiny. Baron recounts and analyzes the rise and fall of one that didn’t handle that scrutiny well – Dov Charney. A Canadian who had been labeled as “genius” by a director at American Apparel, and who had also been pegged as a “brilliant leader” in a 2011 Business Insider article. 

But there were apparent contradictions, as Baron explored in some detail.

For example, Charney was eventually forced out of American Apparel in 2014, amid controversies involving a lawsuit against Woody Allen and allegations of sexual harassment, both of which apparently affected the company’s profits and viability. But as Baron also pointed out, leaders aren’t always flawless, and indeed many, if not most, have had serious flaws. As a case in point – Apple founder Steve Jobs, who was also forced out of his own company for personality-related reasons.

Baron takes the high road and digs deep for solutions as well as investigating the problems, stating that “…genius does not grant you permission to treat others as lesser beings…” and goes on to point out that leaders must not only have passion but “purpose, communication and compassion — so called ‘soft skills’ – to complement their hard skills and so-called genius.”

Is genius enough? For Dov Baron, the answer would have to be a very definitive “No.”

As Baron points out, the iconic brand American Apparel is no longer American. Canadian firm Gildan Activewear recently purchased the name and some manufacturing equipment for $88 million, but declined to buy the brand’s stores and manufacturing in the United States. It marks an ignoble ending to what was once a leading fashion staple.

And another level in the fall from grace for its founder Dov Charney.

He concludes by saying, “It’s no longer possible to use ‘genius’ as a pass for being a miserable human being. If you want to be a leader in today’s world, it is vital that you differentiate between harmless eccentricities (like Charney’s preference for Post-It notes on the wall instead of digital content) and character deficits that can, and probably will, eventually be your demise.”

Ms. Miller recently released an e-book, “Buying A Home After The Big Split” in which she discusses options for those going through a divorce. The largest decision after a split can be deciding if renting or buying is the better choice.  Shelby recommends meeting with a mortgage consultant who can evaluate potential buyer’s current financials and assess the feasibility of obtaining a mortgage independently.  Numerous unknowns may need to be clarified, such as what can be considered income, what joint assets can be utilized, and how long before income can be claimed from a new job for those re-entering the workforce. 

In her e-book, Shelby also addresses other factors that contribute to the decision of renting versus buying.  Aside from determining fiscal responsibility, individuals must decide how long they plan to stay in a particular area.  An individual with small children may choose to buy when planning to stay within a particular school district whereas an individual with teenaged children leaving for college may decide renting is the better option until they can decide where to plant permanent roots.  

In Shelby’s personal experience, she wanted to remain within the same school district that her children were already in but she acknowledges that not everyone in similar situations may have the desire or means to do the same.  If choosing a new location, Shelby recommends that clients check potential neighborhood’s police presence, researching the school districts, and checking the Megan’s Law website.  

Her belief is, “This is about more than real estate.  It is about your life and dreams.  A home is not a home because of room dimensions or the color of the walls. It is about how you feel when you walk through the front door and the way you can instantly envision your life unfolding there.” Because of this, it is easy to see why she was voted the Best Realtor in Upper Bucks.

Upper Bucks Remodeling Company Billingham Built Takes Honors

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Names Contractor of the Year Award winners in New Jersey

On January 20, 2017, the North Jersey and Central Jersey chapters of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) announced the Contractor of the Year™ (CotY) Winners in the 2017 competition.

Billingham Built was awarded top honors in the State of New Jersey for the category Residential Addition $100,000 – $250,000. The owners undertook the construction of an addition to upgrade and expand the master bedroom / bathroom in a 1974 contemporary forest retreat home.  The refreshed and enlarged home will suit their needs for decades to come.  The project increased the master bedroom space by using space previously occupied by the original bathroom.  Not only is the bedroom more spacious, but the space gained by removal of the original bathroom provided for the construction of a walk-in closet.  The entirely new bathroom space offers improved safety for ageing in place, separate sink locations, and increased energy efficiency.  The stunning contemporary design of the addition seamlessly blends with the existing home in both the interior and exterior.  

All projects submitted for judging must demonstrate an improvement or an addition to an existing structure.  New construction projects were not eligible.  To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing.  Competing projects were completed between December 1, 2014, and November 30, 2016, and were not submitted in previous NARI  National contests.  Each project enhanced or improved the homes.  Winning projects are recognized for their contribution to the community as well as the industry.  Winning entries must earn enough points gained by overcoming difficulties on the project, use of innovative construction methods or materials, and meeting the needs and/or desires of the homeowners.  Judging is on an anonymous basis. The judging is performed by remodeling contractors, architects, interior designers and realtors who understand the methods used to create the projects. 

NARI  is a professional association whose members voluntarily subscribe to a strict code of ethics.  NARI members outpace the industry norm in sales, production and employees when compared to professionals represented in the Home Improvement Research Institute’s (HIRI) 2014 Remodeling Professional Study. 

Billingham Built has been in business for over 40 years.  Joseph Billingham, owner, is a NARI Master Certified Remodeler and Certified Kitchen and Bath remodeler.  He is one of 5 Master Certified Remodelers in Pennsylvania and the only MCR in the state of New Jersey.  Over the years, Billingham Built has won numerous local and national awards for their design, careful craftsmanship and work excellence.

CeraNet Named Top Performing Service Provider for Energy Efficiency by AEP of Ohio Data Center Program

COLUMBUS, OH – 15 Mar, 2017 – CeraNet, Inc., a leading Green Data Center and Managed Solutions Provider located in Columbus, Ohio, was identified as a top performing solutions provider for 2016 in the AEP Ohio Energy Efficiency and Data Center programs.  CeraNet was awarded multiple individual awards throughout the year totaling over 420,000 kWh of energy savings. 

Energy savings were calculated from the difference in power draw between older physical servers and the newer high efficiency cloud servers that replaced them.  These awards provide incentive payments that CeraNet uses to fund client upgrades.  Clients were able to upgrade their infrastructure to CeraNet’s high availability cloud computing servers, reduce costs, and minimize their environmental impact.

CeraNet engineers also worked to identify additional energy saving opportunities within the physical data center infrastructure using cool white roof coatings and specialized data center floor layout with spot cooling to save an additional 450,000 kWh of utility power.   These solutions help minimize the power needed to cool the data center, as well as reduce load on the utility grid during peak times.  State of the art solutions like these allow CeraNet operate at a higher efficiency than most data centers and in turn charge much lower rates for equipment colocation and power. 

CeraNet recently launched an initiative to drive 1,000,000 kWh in energy savings for 2017 through an ongoing partnership with clients and AEP Ohio.  Jason Harris with CeraNet stated, “We’ve committed $100,000 in direct payments and services to help clients discover innovative ways to upgrade their technology infrastructure while saving massive amounts of energy.”  These funds will be used to help clients transition from old inefficient physical servers to new high efficiency equipment that power cloud computing solutions. “We offer free expert assistance that enable organizations to develop comprehensive IT infrastructure solutions that not only give them more for their IT budget, but also show them how they can environmentally friendly at the same time,” added Mr. Harris.

World’s Largest Architecture Firm Releases Volume 2 of Professional Practice Case Series

Healing Warriors Program partners with VFW Longs Peak Post 2601

Fort Collins, CO – March 15, 2017 – Thanks to generous funding from Wyatt’s Wet Goods, Healing Warriors Program and Longmont VFW 2601 Longs Peak Post are pleased to announce a partnership for a free veteran’s healing therapy clinic launching Saturday, March 18, 2017. The free veteran’s clinic will operate monthly from 9 am to 1 pm (0900 to 1300) at the Longmont National Guard Armory located at 1512 North Main Street, Longmont, CO, home of Battery A, 3rd Battalion, 157th Field Artillery Regiment.

This free veteran’s clinic supports a joint core goal of aiding service members restore their quality of life. Healing Warriors Program provides Acupuncture, CranioSacral Therapy, and Healing Touch Therapy in support of veteran’s health and wellness goals. The Healing Warriors Program clinic in Fort Collins provides services 5 days a week, 9 am – 5 pm and has delivered over 6k clinic sessions since opening July of 2013.  The Longmont satellite pop-up clinic will enable local Longmont area veterans obtain services closer to home.

“The need for non-narcotic care options for our service members is high. Pain management and post traumatic stress disorder are roadblocks in the veteran’s path towards restoration of quality of life,” says Healing Warriors Program Executive Director and co-founder, Ana Yelen.

Huddle has freely provided over 1.3 billion event tickets to high schools since 2001, saving the schools tens of millions of dollars over the years.  For the 2017-2018 school year, Huddle has expanded its free offerings to include the GoFan™ digital ticketing app. GoFan provides high schools with digital ticketing capabilities along with the convenience, safety and security of professional sporting events at no cost to the schools.

Additionally, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently selected Huddle / GoFan as its exclusive partner for a national rollout of a digital ticketing platform for high school sports.

Digital ticketing provides consumers with a convenient way to purchase and redeem tickets online or via a mobile phone. Digital tickets have become increasingly prevalent in the travel, sports and entertainment industries but have yet to materially impact the more than 450 million tickets sold annually to high school sporting events. High school is one of the largest markets in the world that doesn’t provide a digital ticketing option for fans.
