Medical Jargon Harms Women – A Mammography Callback Doesn’t Mean Cancer

Solis Mammography takes issue with referring to callbacks as false positives

ADDISON, TX – 10 Feb, 2017 – Solis Mammography, the nation’s largest independent provider of breast imaging services, takes issue with incorrectly interpreted terminology used by reporters and others – such as referring to a mammogram callback as a “false positive.” Case in point: a study published Feb. 9 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention referred to mammography recalls as false positive mammograms. This led to news reports across the country stating that a false positive was defined as “a doctor telling a woman that cancer is present, but it turns out not to be.” This is more than a simple misspeak on the part of a reporter. It’s a common misunderstanding and is blatantly false.

A callback is NOT a false positive

After a woman has completed her annual well woman mammogram (2-D or 3-D), the images are viewed and interpreted by a radiologist with about 90 percent of all screenings being negative for breast issues, if read by a specialized breast radiologist. However, if the radiologist can’t see something clearly (sometimes due to dense breast tissue) or sees something that they feel needs a second look, the radiologist will ask the patient to return for more tests, otherwise known as a callback. The radiologist is not saying the first mammogram was a positive indicator for cancer. Rather, he/she is simply stating the need for a closer look – a more magnified view of a particular area (a diagnostic mammogram) – in order to make an accurate recommendation/diagnosis.

Of the small percentage of patients who are called back, on average only 10 percent of those callbacks result in the need for further testing like an ultrasound or biopsy. And even if no additional tests are needed, the recall may simply identify an area that needs observation year over year as a woman’s breast tissue experiences natural changes.

“A callback does not mean a positive finding of cancer,” said James Polfreman, president and CEO, Solis Mammography. “A ‘false positive’ result is medical jargon. Those in the healthcare community understand what it means, but someone unfamiliar with the clinical definition is easily misled to assume it means a misdiagnosis of cancer. Understanding that too many women already avoid mammograms because of fear and anxiety, the term ‘false positives’ should cease to be used in order to help educate women about the importance of regular, annual screening – even when it might result in a callback for additional views.”

All screening providers are not created equal

Clinical research, as published in Radiology, shows there is a significant difference in mammography accuracy between general radiologists and those who specialize in breast imaging. Mammography is most accurate when performed in a breast center with fellowship-trained, specialized breast radiologists; by radiologists who read a high volume of both screening and diagnostic mammograms; and by facilities who employ “batch reading” to interpret screening mammograms without interruption.1 Of the approximately 27,000 radiologists in the U.S., less than 5 percent (or 1,350) meet this standard of mammography focus.2

A specialized breast radiologist typically delivers patients a recall rate substantially lower than that of a generalist radiologist. While the national recall rate for a 2-D screening mammogram is on average 10 to

13 percent, at breast-dedicated centers like Solis Mammography, recall rates are much lower – less than 8 percent on average with no change in cancer detection rates.

In 2013, peer-reviewed research, co-authored by Solis Mammography Chief Medical Officer Dr. Stephen Rose, demonstrated that 3-D mammography (also known as tomosynthesis) increased early detection of breast cancer by 54 percent and reduced recall rates by 37 percent. That 37 percent decrease in callbacks saves patients time and money, but more importantly – reduces unnecessary stress and anxiety. This is a key reason why Solis Mammography has invested more than $18 million since 2014 to upgrade all of their centers to offer 3-D mammography. Dense breast tissue impacts a patients recall percentage. 3-D mammography is substantially better at screening dense breast tissue than 2-D mammography. Women who have denser breast tissue tend to be younger. Dense breast tissue tends to have less fatty tissue and more non-fatty (milk glands, milk ducts and supportive tissue). Fatty tissue appears gray, while dense glandular tissue and breast cancer appear white on a mammogram. By providing the equivalent of 60 1-inch “slices” of breast tissue views, 3-D mammography helps radiologists better differentiate a problematic mass from simple overlying glandular tissue.

How to minimize recall statistics:

1. Opt for a 3-D versus 2-D screening mammogram. While studies have proven that ALL women can greatly benefit from 3D mammography, it is especially helpful if a patient has presented with dense breast tissue, has a strong family history of breast cancer or has previously experienced frequent callbacks.

2. Choose a breast center instead of a general imaging center.

3. Ask the radiologist reading the mammogram, and the technologists performing the compression, if they are breast-imaging specialists. This expertise makes a big difference in accurate diagnoses and minimizes unnecessary discomfort during the screening exam.

4. Ask for the screening facility’s recall rate prior to booking the appointment and compare it to the national benchmark.

5. Inquire if the radiologist employs batch reading to interpret mammograms.

6. Supply the radiologist with previous mammogram images.

Turing Gateway to Mathematics (TGM) is an Impact Initiative in Cambridge, UK. What Is The Turing Gateway

As an impact initiative of the Isaac Newton Institute (INI), the TGM is located within the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS). The Turing Gateway to Mathematics facilitates programmes that allow interactions and activities between the mathematical sciences and the users of mathematics. As a gateway between academic mathematicians and industry, government and other disciplines, the organisation serves as a channel where knowledge and ideas flow to help individuals improve math skills.

Building

The Faulkes Gatehouse was completed in June 2001. The building includes a semi-circular seminar room that seats 50 people. Two of the three offices are used by Turing Gateway to Mathematics. Construction was funded by the Dill Faulkes Educational Trust (DFET) which contributed £1m.

According to a guide of eReleases pricing, eReleases has three tiers of pricing, ranging from $299 to $499. At the top tier, they guarantee distribution in a total of 150 media sites and also allow the inclusion of links and embedded video/audio. They charge a $150 fee for exceeding the word limit.

It’s possible to get a coupon for a discount on the eReleases website. With these discounts, you can get $30 off or 10% off the price of press release distribution. However, these coupons typically can only be used for one of the bottom tiers of service, “Buzzbuilder” or “News Maker.” Customers who desire the superior distribution and service of their top “PR Pro” tier have to pay the full price of $499.

A breakdown of this cost shows that eReleases costs an average of about $1.99 for each media site it reaches.

Although this price compares favorably to some press release distribution companies, it’s not necessarily a fabulous bargain. In fact, another popular company, PRWeb, offers equivalent services for slightly less (only $369 per press release).

PRWeb does not guarantee syndication in media sites. Its cost breaks down to about $2.46 per site, so the ROI may be slightly better with eReleases.

As this eReleases review states: “If you have identified press release distribution as part of your publicity strategy, good for you! With some careful planning and budgeting, this strategy can really pay off… but only if you choose the right press release distribution service.”

This review also reveals a third alternative: Press Release Jet.

Press Release Jet costs only $75, representing significant savings when compared with eReleases or PRWeb. They guarantee syndication in over 375 media sites, resulting in an average cost that works out to about $0.19 per site.

Volkmar Hable and Trump team / Steve Bannon advisors clash on Great Wall in Ohio State University

MIAMI, FL – 13 Feb, 2017 – Donald Trump has issued an executive order calling for a 1,000-mile-long wall on the US-Mexican border. The order allows for six months to survey all 1,000 miles before the groundbreaking.

Smithsonian magazine consulted Volkmar Hable and a panel of experts  on the logistics of such a wall and came away with the impression that Donald Trump has no idea what this involves, and will end up with an expensive, useless disaster.

The panel meeting took place at Ohio State University last week, where representatives of the Donald Trump team, advisors to Steve Bannon, and engineering consulting firms met to exchange ideas on the feasibility to such an undertaking.

In his introductory speech Volkmar Hable noted that the terrain that Donald  Trump wants to cover with his wall includes every imaginable geological difficulty ranging from deep canyons, mountains, unstable underground and bedrock, hydrophilic clay soil (which swells and moves, shattering foundations), sand, and regions where the bedrock is thousands of feet down.

“You’re going to encounter hundreds, if not thousands, of different types of soils along [such a lengthy] linear pathway,” says Dr. Volkmar Hable. He further stated that in fact, there are over 1,300 kinds of soil in Texas alone. And many of those soils aren’t going to be the right type to build on top of. At that point, would-be wall-builders have two options: Spend more time and money excavating the existing soils and replacing them with the necessary foundation—or avoid the region altogether.

Dr. Volkmar Hable stated further that megastructures like the proposed  1,000-mile Great Wall on the US-Mexican border need constant maintenance and surveillance, and would a major fixed cost factor with no tangible return on investment.

These are just the first-order difficulties with the wall. China’s Great Wall took 2,000 years to build and didn’t keep the invaders  out. And there is certainly doubt if such a wall would in fact be the ultimate protection in keeping illegal immigrants out.

Stated Dr. Volkmar Hable “Walls can be climbed over, and crossed under through tunnels or simply bypassed in regions where due to the terrain a wall simply would not be feasible at all.”

Upkeep of such a lengthy structure is challenging. And even if such a wall can be erected, the size of budget necessary to keep it standing remains unclear.

Further risks like earthquakes and floods would contribute to cost increases. Rivers run along a sizeable portion of the U.S.-Mexico border, which can create a very real danger of flooding and additional cost factors. 

Dr. Volkmar Hable also reminded the audience of just one of many legal issues: A 1970 treaty necessitates that the current border fence be set back from the Rio Grande river, which delineates the Texas-Mexico border. Because of this, the current fence crosscuts Texas landowner’s property and has gaps to allow landowners to pass.

And last but not least there is the cost issue, said Dr. Volkmar Hable. “I have a hard time to imagine that such a megastructure can be built for 8 billion dollars. The right figure in all likelihood lacks a zero, we are talking of a cost closer to 80 billion than to 8 billion dollars.

Or let me put it in other words he said: it will be a lot cheaper and less difficult to set up a permanent human outpost on Mars than building this wall.

The concept behind the Record is just basically describing that we moving at a Pace feeling like we getting Evicted because we moving so fast. We just got that hustle like you still broke mentality in us.

Your album “Invincible Armour” features a bunch of HIP HOP Heavy WeightS, How do you manage to get so much support from your peers?

I’m just staying real, positive, Productive and not taking no for an answer. The stars just lined up right for this Project right here and my peers want to see me win and in  a good Situation because they know i helped a lot of People to get into good situations as well so i think it’s a Karma thing. Do good and receive good. Period.

Everyone knows you rep Germany,  how was it growing up there? 

[Man] Germany is a dope country it has its good and Bad sides like every other country. I was brought up in a good Household with limited resources tho. My Mom always made it work somehow. My Dad was there to but my Stepdad. I don’t know my real Dad but i don’t care to know him as well.

How would you describe your music in 3 words?

Raw, Real, Unorthodox.

Which song by an artist other than yourself is your theme music right now? 

Been listening to Noreaga Pyramids everyday and DMX Slippin.

Many Rappers have rituals before getting creative in the studio, how do you set the mood before recording?

It lands different with me. Sometimes i just feel the Drive to go to the Studio another time i gotta force myself to go there but when i’m there i just go in. Its no real ritual. It depends on my Mood.

The last Rap Album i bought was the Game Documentary 2.5 because i support everything the Game does. He showed me a lot of Love and he made an Incredible Album. So yea that’s the last Album i bought.

I just go with the flow. I’m so deep into it that i just keep going and going and going. Its just a point of no return for me because its still alot i havent done yet that i still need to do tho. so its just the strive.

You’ve accomplished so much independently, would you ever consider signing with a Major Label?

Not really. A Major slows you down a lot and takes your Freedom away to do what you want to do so i feel more comfortable in the Driver seat. There are no guarantees with a Major Record company. So running my own Label allows me to move how i want to move at all times and all the Kickback is mine as well.

SHELTON, CT – 13 Feb, 2017 – Gerry Chase, president and COO of New Castle Hotels & Resorts, a leading third-party management company, and hotel developer, today announced that Trevor Stratton has been appointed general manager of the 138-room Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island and will oversee an upcoming upgrade to the hotel’s rooms and public spaces. 

Stratton returns to the hotel following two years as the director of operations for the 200-room, full-service Westin Jekyll Island, where he was responsible for pre-opening hiring and training and day-to-day post-opening operations. In its first year of operation, Westin Jekyll Island exceeded brand standards for guest engagement and was ranked number two in the market by Trip Advisor.  Under his leadership, the Hampton Inn consistently earned guest satisfaction scores in the top 15 percent of Hampton Inn properties worldwide.  Stratton began his career at New Castle as the personnel manager for the Racine Marriott.  Prior to moving into operations, he was the company’s area director of human resources.
