Author of A Better Life, Shawn Anderson Offers Push to Get Rolling Again.

Finally, Anderson states, “Don’t fall into the excuse trap that now is not the right time for you to keep going with a goal. Now is the time. Waiting for the perfect situation to unfold before we find the guts to make changes only prolongs our existence in a mediocre rut.” Anderson goes on, “Don’t wait for the stars to fall into perfect alignment. If things are not lining-up as you would like, get over it. Never stop creating the change you truly desire in your life.”

The author of six motivational books, including A Better Life: An Inspiring Story About Starting Over and Extra Mile America: Stories of Inspiration, Possibility and Purpose, Anderson is also the creator of “Extra Mile Day” – a day recognizing the capacity we each have to create positive change when we go the extra mile. On November 1, 2016, 560 mayors and cities made the unique declaration and recognized those in their local communities who were going the extra mile in volunteerism and service.

The Working Girl’s Guide to Rehabbing Houses: Lessons on Overcoming Fear, Funding Your Dreams and Daring to Live a Life You Love,” reached #1 in the Women in Business for New Releases category on Amazon.

After she smashed one “impossible,” she went on to write two more books within six months, and is now working on a fourth titled, “Truth and Dare,” which is based on the Dare the Impossible program, and will challenge readers to smash their beliefs about what is possible in their lives and what they can create.

Certainly, a major part of Campbell’s success is that she is her client.

Recalling her fear while trying to write her first book, she says: “I thought it was impossible until it wasn’t. We don’t even know what we’re capable of.”

This success in the publishing world led Campbell to create what she calls her favorite project right now: The 90-Day Get Your Book Done Dare.

“I dare you to get your book done in 90 days,” she says. “I can show you how to do it.” 

In addition to the 90-day book writing dare, Campbell is also launching a new program daring entrepreneurs and employees to become a paid speaker.

Private schools to lead UAE education sector growth into 2020

• Enrolment increases and continued quality improvement expected in K-12 although UAE is still behind OECD averages and its own National Agenda Target in international assessment results

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – The private school sector in the UAE is expected to continue to drive the growth of the Emirates’ education market to 2020.

Over 175,000 additional seats are predicted to be required in the K-12 segment in the next four years, and 90% of this will come from private school enrolees.

Almost all of the Emirates, led by Dubai, are witnessing growth in private K-12 enrolment, with the exception of Fujairah. However, as more quality schools are opening, efforts to attract and retain students will become a more pressing issue for school operators.

The data was released through a study published by PwC Middle East, Understanding the GCC Education Sector, Country Profile: UAE, ahead of the largest gathering of education stakeholders in the Middle East, Global Education Supplies and Solutions (GESS) Dubai 2017, which will take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre on March 14-16.

“The study presents a positive outlook for the education market in the UAE, and perceptively presents not just opportunities but also challenges for those involved in shaping the future of education in the country. Coming from an esteemed organization such as PwC, this will hopefully bring to light needed action steps for stakeholders to ensure the continued success of the UAE education sector,” said Matt Thompson, Project Director, F&E Education, organisers of GESS Dubai 2017.

Other significant findings of the report show that based on historic demographic trends, Dubai is forecast to require 74,500 additional seats in 50 new private schools by 2020, while 62,000 additional seats in 52 new private schools in the same period will be needed in Abu Dhabi.

“Making sense of a rapidly evolving education market in the Gulf region is challenging given the availability of information. In our emerging series of reports – Understanding the GCC Education Sector – we profile each of the six countries in the GCC, to contribute to a better appreciation of the trends and issues being faced by decision makers in both the private and public sectors. At GESS Dubai, our Dubai based team of education experts hopes to engage a broad audience of education stakeholders in the debate that we hope will ultimately prove useful for all those involved in shaping the future of education in this part of the world,” said Roland Hancock, PwC Middle East Education Director.

Sally Jeffery, PwC Middle East Education & Skills Partner and PwC Global Education Sector Leader points out that “The public education systems in the GCC are using national curricula, which have a lot of reform to go through still. They are not as mature as international curricula and content and the pedagogy is very different. They are putting a lot of effort into modernising their curricula but that process is difficult to do it quickly. In the private sector there are a couple of areas that are underserved. Pre-school is growing at twice the rate of K-12 and that demand can be met by smaller sized facilities, and regulation – particularly pricing – is less controlled than in K-12, although this may be changing as the government focuses more on early learning. There are also gaps in higher education, which need development funding, particularly for STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] subjects, which are much needed, but expensive to operate.  Leading STEM universities world-wide depend heavily on their endowment funds.”

The report also notes that given the increasing number and quality of schools, parents have a better selection of schools in which to enrol their children. This choice puts pressure on those not ranked by government authorities as either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ to improve their offerings in order to attract students. It is expected that cost will play a critical role in changing the supply-demand dynamic, with calls for Dubai to have more quality schools below the average annual tuition of AED40,000.

More insights from the report include that in Dubai, UK and Indian curriculum schools continue to dominate but that IB curriculum schools are becoming an increasingly popular option among parents. Meanwhile, in Abu Dhabi, Indian and American curriculum schools are driving growth but British curriculum schools remain popular choices with parents considering admission to lower cost European higher education institutes.

As for the Pre-K education segment, formal education is being encouraged by the UAE government in this sector, potentially paving the way for a significant increase in the number of providers targeting this age group. For example, if UAE were to reach the OECD average participation rate of 33% for 0-2 year olds by 2020, PwC estimates that over 81,500 additional seats will be required.

Insights from over 130 education experts and speakers who will come to share their expertise at than more than 200 workshops, panel discussions and sessions will take place at the CPD-accredited conference at GESS Dubai.

Anti-Human Trafficking Group Orchestrates Super Bowl ‘Thunderclap’ Message

In Our Backyard targets Super Bowl audience sharing blitz for hard-hitting ‘Break the Silence’ social media campaign

HOUSTON, TX – 1 Feb, 2017 – Anti-human trafficking campaigners are orchestrating a social media play on Super Bowl Sunday to recruit supporters and shine a spotlight on the realities of sex trafficking.

Action and advocacy group In Our Backyard (IOB, http://inourbackyard.org ) aims to get a quarter of a million views of its new awareness video by the end of the first quarter of the big game between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons, in Houston on Feb. 5, through a social media campaign.

The hard-hitting short “Break the Silence” Thunderclap message features former sex trafficking victims holding signs with things they were told by their traffickers. For one survivor, it was: “I wish a trick would hurry up and kill you.” Another woman was told: “You were made for this life. Men’s pleasures. Sex.”

Sex trafficking occurs “365 days a year in every zip code in America,” the video explains, “but there is hope” — through education, prevention, action, awareness and empowerment efforts, IOB is helping turn the tide.

“Spotlighting the issue is the first step in ending sex trafficking,” said Nita Belles, anti-human trafficking expert and founder of IOB. “All the traffickers ask is that we stay silent, so they can continue to profit off the repeated sale of innocent victims. It’s time to break the silence. Everyone can be a part of the solution by joining our campaign.”

IOB has chosen Super Bowl Sunday for the social media push because of the huge audience the event draws, and the positive reception to the NFL’s anti-domestic violence ad broadcast during last year’s game. 

Meanwhile, in the lead-up to Feb. 5, In Our Backyard is working closely with Houston law enforcement officers to aid and assist in the identification and location of suspected traffickers leading up to the Super Bowl, as Belles has done for the last seven Super Bowls.

“As we anticipated, we’re seeing a bubble of increase in prostitution and human trafficking activity,” said Houston Vice Capt. Dan Harris. “The good thing is, we’re seeing it. We’re looking for it, and we have the assets in place. We’re going to have a lot of presence in the streets, going into hotels, going into the massage parlors, the men’s clubs… over the next 10 days.” 

Since 2006, Belles has become widely recognized as a leading voice in the fight against human trafficking. A frequent speaker to law enforcement, medical, civic and community groups, she has also been an adviser on anti-trafficking legislation to legislators in several states, and authored what has been called the primer on human trafficking “In Our Backyard: Human Trafficking in America and What We Can Do to Stop It.”

Arizona Surgeon Survives Cancer to Invent and Perform Record-Setting Cancer Surgery

MESA, AZ – 1 Feb, 2017 – The World Record Academy recently awarded Dr. Greg J. Marchand and Dr. Snehal Bhoola a world record for removing a 17-centimeter cancerous ovarian tumor using only small slits in the abdomen, a technique called a laparoscopy. While removing cysts and tumors using laparoscopic surgery is a standard practice, Dr. Marchand said it is rare to use the technique in conjunction with an ovarian cancer staging procedure.

The surgeons completed the procedure using “in-bag” morcellation, a technique developed by Dr. Marchand in which the tumor is literally bagged and broken down inside the bag so the particles can be extracted laparoscopically. Otherwise, patients would need a sizeable incision to surgically remove such a large mass, requiring additional recovery time.

Marchand, a board-certified OB-GYN, worked closely with Dr. Bhoola, a gynecologic oncologist, in completing the surgery.

Marchand said the most difficult part of the surgery was removing the cancerous mass without spilling any cancer cells into the abdomen. If cancerous material slipped back into the abdomen the cancer could have spread and worsened the patient’s prognosis. The World Record Academy helped verify that this type technique had never been accomplished previously on any malignant tumor this large.

Dr. Marchand, who was diagnosed in 2010 with mixed-cell carcinoma, an aggressive cancer, said it is particularly gratifying that his technique can help cancer patients. He received surgery and treatment in 2010 has been in remission since.

“I know what it’s like to face a diagnosis of cancer,” he said. “In my opinion, advancements in the surgical treatment of cancer are just as important as the newest cancer-fighting drugs and chemotherapy agents.”

“If we can use minimally invasive surgery to take some of the recovery time and complications out of cancer surgery, then I think we’ve really done a lot of good for patients fighting cancer.”

This is Dr. Marchand’s second world record in laparoscopic surgical excellence. In 2008 Dr. Marchand was awarded a Guinness World Record for the removal of the largest uterus laparoscopically. In this case, it was not a cancerous mass, but a seven-pound benign (non-cancerous) uterus that was removed.

In addition to the two world records, Dr. Marchand is extensively published in laparoscopic surgery and was recently the first U.S. surgeon to receive SOEMIS recognition, (Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery) from The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopist’s (AAGL.org) Surgical Review Corporation (surgicalreview.org).

Description of Technical Procedure Performed: Successful Complete Laparoscopic Ovarian Cancer Staging Procedure with Hysterectomy, Bilateral Salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy and dissection of pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection, and removal of 17cm large right-sided ovarian tumor. The tumor was found to be adenocarcinoma on frozen section and “Well-differentiated Adenocarcinoma with pushing invasion” on final pathology. The technique of mass removal was a modified “in-bag” morcellation invented by Dr. Marchand which included exteriorization of the mouth of the bag prior to “in-bag” morcellation. Morcellation used only blunt instruments and did not involve stretching the incision beyond the 14mm required to facilitate the laparoscopic retrieval bag. Abdominal and Pelvic washings were collected prior to the removal of the mass and ultimately proved negative.

Why did it take so long for the World Record to be awarded?

To verify this record, we had to research all the other related surgeries that had been published to determine if ours was truly the largest malignant tumor ever surgically staged through completely laparoscopic means. After our research determined it was, we employed the World Record Academy who underwent their own verification process. Following the completion of these two independent verifications, we can now confidently say that this is likely the largest malignant ovarian tumor to ever undergo completely laparoscopic surgical staging.

What is “In-Bag” morcellation, how is it different from just breaking something apart, or regular morcellation?

In-Bag morcellation refers to the surgical technique of placing an object inside a bag, usually plastic, before breaking it into pieces. Usually the object is broken into small pieces so that it can be removed through small holes, thus not needing to make a large incision to remove the object. This high level of caution is reserved for objects that could contain cancerous cells. In the case of suspicion of cancerous cells, it is important not to spill the material back into the patient’s body cavities because cancer cells can “Seed” or begin new cancer colonies if they are moved around the body. In this case, we removed a 17-centimeter cancerous tumor through a hole that was approximately 1.4cm large. This technique is one of the more extreme examples of “In-Bag” morcellation.

What did Dr. Marchand invent? Did he invent laparoscopy or the Ovarian Cancer Staging Procedure?

Dr. Marchand has pioneered techniques for “In-Bag” morcellation, and particularly the technique used in this case to remove the large 17cm tumor. The technique used here involved stretching a 1.10cm incision in the umbilicus to facilitate a bag that was made to fit a 1.5cm port. Thus, the actual size of the hole after stretching around the bag was approximately 1.4cm. This invented technique also included the painstaking process of removing the mass through the port without breaking the bag. This included the use of special blunt instrumentation to remove the tumor without breaking the bag (and spilling the tumor.) Dr. Marchand did not invent laparoscopy or the Ovarian Cancer Staging procedure, but he did invent the technique of removing the large cancerous tumor, which was then added to a Laparoscopic Ovarian Cancer staging procedure.

Is Dr. Marchand a gynecologic oncologist?

No. Dr. Marchand is a generalist OBGYN with special training in minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Bhoola is board certified in gynecologic oncology and all decisions regarding the patient’s care with regard to the cancer staging were made by Dr. Bhoola. Dr. Marchand would never attempt to perform an ovarian cancer surgery without the assistance of a gynecologic oncologist, and is very appreciative for the patient care that has been given by Dr. Bhoola. What is a “Cancer Staging Surgery?”

A cancer staging surgery is a removal of the pelvic organs to treat and determine how far a cancer has spread. In this case the cancer is an ovarian cancer we are discussing. The surgery includes removal of both ovaries, the uterus, the omentum (a fatty organ in the abdomen) as well as the removal of lymph nodes and other biopsies. It is a complex surgery that is usually performed through a large incision. Although the surgery has been performed by laparoscopic techniques in the past, we believe this is the largest tumor to ever be staged using a completely laparoscopic technique.

What is so special about this record? Hasn’t cancer staging surgery been performed on larger ovarian tumors?

Yes, staging procedures have been completed on larger tumors, but we believe that this is the largest tumor to ever be staged through entirely laparoscopic techniques, meaning without cutting the patient open. The “special” part of this procedure was the removal of the extremely large mass without spilling any of the contents in the abdomen. This was performed with special instruments using a large bag. The technique involved exteriorizing the mouth of the bag and then removing the large mass bit by bit, using a technique pioneered by Dr. Marchand. There is no question that larger tumors have been staged by open-incision procedures, and that larger non-malignant tumors have been removed laparoscopically without the need for a cancer staging procedure.

How can you be sure that this is the largest tumor to ever receive laparoscopic cancer staging? What steps did you take to verify?

It is very difficult to research every single cancer staging procedure ever performed. However, we performed extensive searches of all available literature and publications regarding laparoscopic ovarian cancer staging surgery prior to presenting our claim to The World Record Academy. The World Record Academy then went on to verify the claim independently.

How would the average ovarian cancer patient benefit if all staging procedures could be performed though minimally invasive means?

If all ovarian cancer staging procedures could be performed using laparoscopic means, patients could enjoy much faster recovery from surgery, with a much quicker return to a high quality of life. This would mean that patients could begin any necessary chemotherapy or radiation treatments sooner, and be healthier when they undergo these treatments. The overall goal would be a lower mortality and higher quality of life for patients facing a malignant diagnosis.

War Prevention Initiative: Executive Order Limiting Refugees Into the U.S. is Inhumane, Misguided and Counterproductive.

PORTLAND, OR – 2/1/2017 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — Citing concerns over national security and the threat of terrorism, President Trump signed an Executive Order on January 27, 2017, indefinitely barring Syrian refugees from entering the United States, suspending all refugee admissions for 120 days and imposing a 90 day ban of immigrants and nonimmigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. This is a blanket suspicion for 205 million people. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights denounced Donald Trump’s ban on U.S. travel from several Muslim-majority countries, claiming the executive order was “mean-spirited, and wastes resources needed for proper counter-terrorism” and illegal under international human rights law.

“The abstract horrors of such a ban, which has been announced throughout the electoral campaign through inciting rhetoric, became very real when news spread about detentions at U.S. airports,” said Patrick Hiller, Executive Director of the War Prevention Initiative. “For those of us who use our skills and expertise to work for a more just and peaceful world, the implementation of this order sent shockwaves through our bodies. We recognize an utter lack of compassion with those who suffer most from the horrors of war and persecution, we recognize the rejection of American core values and we consider such a ban absolutely counter-productive.”

The global refugee crisis emerging from the Middle East and North Africa is primarily rooted in wars and conflicts caused by historical and current Western policies toward the region and its people. The medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said that the suspension of U.S. refugee resettlement endangers people fleeing war zones. Except for Iran, the countries affected by the ban are among the ten least peaceful countries in the world, according to the 2016 Global Peace Index. The refugees are not faceless masses, but individuals and families whose lives have been uprooted and who are displaced from their homes, often forever. They are direct victims of conflicts and wars. As such, they are fellow humans who were affected by loss of loved ones, destruction of homes and infrastructure, the use of depleted uranium, malnutrition, diseases, lawlessness, persecution, intra-state killings, rape and other forms of sexual violence and large-scale social injustices. Turning our back on them is not compatible with a compassionate view of all humans regardless of origin, religion or race.

If the goal of this Executive Order is to protect the United States against terrorism, then it is a highly misguided way to achieve it. The ban on immigrants does not address the national origins of any terrorist attackers on U.S. soil, including the 9/11 attackers. Daniel Benjamin, former State Department Counterterrorism Coordinator, noted that “the jihadist threat in the United States has turned out to be largely homegrown”, and the order “will encourage precisely the resentments and anxieties on the part of Muslims that fuel, in rare cases, support for the ideology of the Islamic State or Al Qaeda.” Apart from the affronts to American and human values, the Executive Order will fail at granting the security that the President promises. Experts say that by targeting Muslims, the Executive Order will provide ISIS and like organizations with a renewed wave of recruits by playing into their beliefs that the West is at war with Islam. The Executive Order will also jeopardize the western militaries and diplomats in the region, the same people Trump claims to be championing.

Instead of inhumane, misguided and counter-productive responses to terrorism, the War Prevention Initiative is part of a community of experts who rely on best practices and scientific insights into providing numerous viable measures to transform terrorism. Immediate approaches rely on national and international law enforcement and judicial processes for individuals and groups involved in acts of terror, while long-term measures aimed at structural prevention address terrorism at its roots as a political, social and cultural problem.

It is for this reason that we strongly condemn the Executive Order and continue to advocate for politics of inclusion and common security of all humans.
