USA – 12/15/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — Since coming into the spotlight, psychobiotics have caused rivers of ink to flow.  The term “psychobiotics” was coined at the end of October by Ted Dinan Professor of Psychiatry, University College Cork, Ireland and his colleagues from the Department of Psychiatry at the university.

An ongoing research since 2013 focuses on the role of the microbiota (gut flora) in social behavior, corroborated in recent studies in experimental animals. (Desbonnet L et al., Mol Psychiatry. 2013).

In a paper published in April 2013 in the first issue of the Journal of Probiotics and Health magazine (West R et al.), conducted on a total of 33 children and teenagers with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) who throughout the investigation received over a period of 6 months a blend of 5 probiotic strains (Delpro®), it was noted that, in addition to a lessening of the digestive symptomatology on those patients, there was a visible improvement in the behavioral items of the ATEC scale, an assessment scale that measures the severity of the autism. It is in this scale where parameters like language, sociability, learning and behavior are measured.
