Medina County’s newest celebrity canine could barely contain his excitement yesterday during the Top Dog Essay Contest awards ceremony.

Dexter, a beagle-dachshund mix, wagged his tail and barked happily as the fourth-grade honorees, their families, their teachers and their pets gathered at the Medina County Auditor’s Office.

He managed to calm down and contain himself, though, once the five contest winners – including his owner, Adrienne Raglow – settled in to read their essays to Auditor Mike Kovack and the rest of the audience.

When it was his turn in the spotlight, Dexter sat at the feet of his mistress, let his tongue loll, and listened as Adrienne shared why she thinks Dexter is the Top Dog in Medina County.

The Auditor’s Office staff must have agreed, as Adrienne’s essay was chosen as the first-place winner and Dexter was crowned as the county’s Top Dog for 2017. He owes the honor – and his home – to Adrienne, a fourth-grader at Crestview Elementary School and the daughter of Michelle and Paul Raglow.

For months, Adrienne begged for a dog, leaving notes all over the house to lobby her parents. In the end, she had to wait until her father recovered from cancer before she could get her wish. “My dog and I have an unbreakable bond. He taught me that if you wait, good things will come,” Adrienne wrote in her winning essay. “Dexter is the most special dog in the whole world. We just love each other,” she said. Dexter and Adrienne went home with the No. 1 dog license tag for 2017, as well as prizes including a 30-pound bag of Bil-Jac dog food and a certificate for a deluxe party at Amazone Entertainment Center.

The second- through fifth-place contest winners and their dogs also received bags of dog food, as well as prizes from Kitten Krazy/Quick Fix, Medina AMF Bowling Center, Medina/Seville Dairy Queen and Medina Skateland.

The runners-up and their dogs are: * Second place – Adam Goe and Lucy. Adam is the son of Heather and Charles Goe and attends Ralph E. Waite Elementary School in Medina. * Third place – Mackenzie Hartman and Bailey. Mackenzie is the daughter of Daniel and Jennifer Hartman and attends St. Francis Xavier School in Medina. * Fourth place – Carlin Swanson and Daisy. Carlin is the daughter of Amy Swanson and attends Franklin Elementary School in Wadsworth. * Fifth place – Mya Kosar and Nico. Nico is not actually Mya’s dog – he is the K9 partner of Brunswick police officer Mark Luciano. Mya is the daughter of Larissa and Jim Kosar and attends H.G. Blake Elementary School in Medina.

This is the 22nd year that Kovack has hosted the Top Dog Essay Contest to kick off the annual dog-licensing season. Three hundred fourth-graders from around the county wrote essays for the contest.

“I want to thank all of the authors who took the time and effort to tell us about their dogs,” Kovack said. “This contest is a wonderful opportunity for our fourth-graders to practice their writing skills,” he said. Dog licenses are on sale now through Jan. 31. Cost is $10 for a one-year tag, $30 for a three-year tag and $100 for a permanent tag. Chicago, Illinois – ROI² Partners, a company that developed a new template for fantasy sports leagues, announced today the first edition of its rules and league management tools for World Football Trifecta Leagues. The company also announced its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter with a goal to raise $50,000 and support the start of 1,000+ leagues during the upcoming postseason in professional football.

Using the tagline, “professional football analysis for the horse race enthusiast,” the first edition of the rules for the World Football Trifecta Leagues simulates horse racing. Each league pits six to ten players, called “Analysts,” against each other in weekly “pick three” contests to predict the outcomes of professional football games. The players adopt thoroughbred names and “home teams” that determine the games from which to pick three winners in the week. A league then divides a professional football league’s regular season into four races, dubbed “The Quaternary Crown,” each lasting four to five weeks. The four Crown races utilize different point systems to reward players whose picks are correct, but that also meet the specific race criteria for extra points. The points then translate into “horse lengths” that determine who is the winning analyst.

In addition the Crowns, there are two season-ending competitions to hold players’ interests over the entire season: an Analyst of the Year award for the most accurate prognosticator during the regular season and a postseason World Football Analyst Championship for the most accurate picks in the postseason. Each race is distinct so that players are not eliminated by mid-season and all analyst-players remain engaged in the competitions of sports analysis until season-end. 

The company developed and published its fantasy football league rules online during the past three years (see: http://www.roi2partners.com/wftl/). “The standard office and pick ’em pools have not seen the kind of innovation and technological support that player-based fantasy football has witnessed in the past twenty years,” said Joe Wycoff, head of the family-owned business. “The pools, however, have limited appeal because participants are required to study and pick every game in every week of the entire season regardless of their familiarity with football in general or the individual teams.” 

To address this barrier to adoption for pick ’em leagues, the home teams of the Analysts determine the games from which players pick winners each week. This is the most significant departure from standard fantasy football leagues in which participants draft players for fantasy teams. Mr. Wycoff added, “We believe there is a segment of the market for fantasy football that wants to get back to watching football games and rooting for home teams rather than reading individual player stats, injury reports and data from predictive models.”

Consequently, ROI² Partners envisions the first edition of its league rules as a template for additional versions of its concept for fantasy sports leagues. For instance, an international professional football league such as a premier soccer league with thirty-eight matches may be divided into three “grand tour” cycling races among the analyst-players. The company is already developing a “Football Game of the Year” edition of its rules to simulate a professional football game, rather than horse racing. The “Football Game of the Year” edition will be a fantasy game in which the pick-three competitions take place over four weeks of the regular season as if each week is one of four quarters in a football game.

“Soccardo is like a cross of Football Manager, Fantasy Football, Top Trumps, and Chess,” the creator explains, “You go one on one against your opponents and prove who’s the best at all of them in about 15 minutes.”

Every Soccardo Game Set features an introduction card that gives players the run down on what the game is about. On the reverse of this card is a game map to help players set up and a separate Referee Card explains the rules. Game is ideal for 8+ and can be played on any plat surface.

As Soccardo Managers, opponents take turns selecting players and building teams 11 in the super draft. Players must quickly assess their team’s talents and weaknesses to strategically set up a strong formation. This involves deciding who will make the starting lineup and who starts on the bench.

Once players are lined up, it’s time to challenge for the title of Soccardo Champion. Both managers will select a player and choose their attack or defense. Rolling the game dice in the battle box will simulate the players making a challenge on the pitch. This score is then added or subtracted from the player points to see if they have the skills to win.

O’Leary and his wife started developing Soccardo with Sharpies, paper, and blank playing cards. After planning the game and testing it out, they knew that it had potential. After learning how to use photoshop and identifying manufacturing partners, O’Leary is now excited to introduce Soccardo to the Kickstarter community.    

“It is up to you to choose the plays that matter. Pass to create opportunities. Take on the thru ball or shoot and get the glory,” says O’Leary, “That’s if you can negotiate a way past the tackles, blocks and saves of your determined opponent.”
