On a recent episode of Business Innovators Radio with Mark Imperial, Ferne Kornfeld, President and Co-Founder of First Financial Tax Group, discussed little-known conservative retirement strategies.

According to Kornfeld, many folks are very scattered in their retirement planning, when a coordinated approach would ensure greater success.

Kornfeld, said “For example, many people wouldn’t think to discuss their legal documents, or lack thereof, with their financial advisor, but really, your legal status has a lot to do with your finances. And while we aren’t attorneys ourselves, we are the ones who often see the negative impact of people not having the proper legal documents as they relate to one’s finances and healthcare.”

When host Mark Imperial asked how to provide both safety AND yield in today’s environment Kornfeld answered, “So many of the folks we see these days have been “reaching for yield”, which really is just a fancy term meaning that they are “buying all things that pay an income”. And in doing so, many feel that they have taken on too much risk to get that yield. They know it, and are uncomfortable with it, but feel they have little or no alternative. But that isn’t true. There are alternatives. They just aren’t exposed to them by traditional Wall Street because traditional Wall Street is all about the risk markets, and about putting one’s capital at risk all the time.”

During the interview, Kornfeld shared an example of a product that is simpler, safer, and also more secured than what most are doing with their portfolios right now, explaining, “Let’s take just one example of what I’m talking about. First Position Commercial Mortgage Notes, or FPCMs. These notes pay a fixed yield of 6% and the term is just one year. What’s the bank paying these days, Mark? 1% maybe? Anyway, interest is paid out monthly from these FPCMs, so these are “fixed income” vehicles as well, because the yield is fixed for the 1-year term.”

Ferne Kornfeld is the President and Co-Founder of First Financial Tax Group, a board member for the Women’s Executive Club of south Palm Beach County, and is known for teaching conservative retirement income planning classes at a local university.

The interview concluded with Kornfeld saying “(In our University classes) We focus on the pitfalls others have encountered when planning for retirement and how to avoid making those same mistakes, as well as the variety of opportunities there are out there to take advantage of. We try to alleviate the fear of retirement planning by providing impartial information based on research rather than opinion. The feedback we’ve gotten from our students over the years has been tremendous. They feel more empowered to make ‘confident’ decisions regarding their own retirement, as well as feeling a sense of relief that they’ve taken the first step in tackling the issue of preparing their own retirement plan.”

On a recent episode of Business Innovators Radio with Mark Imperial, Michael Watkins, an Investment Adviser Representative and Retirement Income Planner, discussed fiduciary responsibilities and income planning for retirement.

According to Watkins, many folks are overwhelmed with information about the hundreds of Investment options available to them.  Education is needed as to the pros and cons of all the products, services and approaches that are out there, and a Fiduciary can give you the unbiased information.

When asked what a Fiduciary is, Watkins explained “(A Fiduciary) is an adviser that holds special licensing and registration, who is held to the highest standards of delivering unbiased, accurate information and advice that must be in the client’s best interest before the Adviser’s and his or her firm.”

Watkins continued “Let’s face it folks, we live in a world where we are bombarded over 600 times a day with advertisements form billboards, radio, TV, Internet, direct mail, you name it… This really makes it hard for people to make an informed decision when facing 100s of choices. Have you ever tried typing the word “Investments” into a google search… you get 390 million results in a 1/2 of a second.”

When host Mark Imperial asked what is the most common pitfall or misconception clients face, Watkins answered, “I can tell you without hesitation…. not all financial advice is equal or is it in the best interest of clients and please let me explain. If you were to ask ten different Financial Advisers the same question chances are that you will get ten different answers and most likely those answers will be based on the companies, products, and services those advisers represent. In the financial world that is called being ‘Captive’ which means those advisers are only allowed to offer what their company has and nothing else. You see The Banks and Big Box Retail Brokerage Houses have propriety products to sell and quotas to meet. There is great internal pressure there to sell what their brand is selling.”

During the Interview Watkins shared how advisers and clients may have conflicting agendas, explaining, “This is why I feel so compelled to help people avoid unknowing mistakes or simply just purchasing products because someone says it is the best… well that might be the best their company has to offer, but what the folks are not being told sometimes is that better products or services exist. That is why working with a fiduciary is so important for your financial success in retirement.”

Blanchfield claims the threats started after a short interview he gave with the local television station.

In a related development, Blanchfield appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight on The Fox News Network November 23 where he had a spirited exchange with the host on several topics including the nature of the kind of Fascist dictatorship he thinks Trump will impose on America.

At one point during their televised exchange, Carlson brought up the point that refusing to do business with someone who has beliefs you disagree with runs contrary to the platforms the left has espoused over the last eight years.

Blanchfield replied that his actions were his alone and that he was acting as an individual.

“I don’t speak for the left. I don’t speak for any group,” he said. “I speak for myself and having the moral turpitude to stand up against the masses is what a patriot actually does.”

He added that it took courage to risk his business and even his physical well-being for what he believed in.
