Richard Gomez: Anti-Drugs Advocate for Decades

Richard Gomez has been fighting the war on drugs, long before he became a politician. He is a firm believer that giving the youth an alternative interest, specifically sports, can help them stay away from drugs. In 2001, he founded the K.I.D.S. Foundation, an acronym that stands for Kabataan Iwas Droga sa Tulong ng Sports.

Gomez himself is a nationally respected sportsman.  In 2005, he bagged the gold medal in fencing while representing the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games. Among other sports that he plays are rowing, golf, basketball and volleyball. Through the KIDS Foundation, he has managed to organize young people in various communities to develop an interest in various sports, by providing sports facilities and sponsoring sporting events that encourage healthy competition.

This social scheme against drugs has been corroborated by many organizations worldwide. By providing teenagers something to do, and something to strive for, the proliferation of drug use is stifled. On top of this, inspiring the youth to love sports helps mold their minds to encourage them to achieve personal and career goals.

Therefore, it is no surprise that one of the first major projects of Gomez, as mayor of the City of Ormoc, was to promote sports and cultural activities to the residents and youth of Ormoc. This is all part of the Get Ormoc Moving Again (GOMA) program, which encompasses sports and cultural competitions and other events. #GetOrmocMovingAgain

Following are just some examples of activities under the GOMA program.

The Terry Larrazabal Bike Festival (TLBF) took place on October 27 – 30, 2016. Together with SP member Vince Rama, Mayor Gomez joined the fun with the bikers. This is one of the popular mountain cycling events in the country. This year’s race was a UCI Class 3 event.

During Ormoc’s 69th Charter Day celebrations, Mayor Gomez’s GOMA program sponsored several competitions. Below is the Chess Tournament at the Ormoc City Superdome organized by the Ormoc Chess Club.

Indeed, sports plays a vital role in Mayor Richard Gomez’s thrust to eradicate drug use in Ormoc City. The Ormoc City LGU has already seen hundreds of drug criminals surrender to law enforcement officers. Mayor Gomez’ approach to the drug issue is in fact unique because it combines law enforcement with providing alternative activities for the youth. So much has been accomplished in his first few months in office. But there is still so much to be done, and he is hardly running out of ideas. The city of looking forward to more.

The Insider Risk: 3 Organisational Insider Threats

November 15, 2016 – Many organisation’s data protection systems, access control mechanismsand physical access barriers are designed primarily to protect a company’s critical data from external risk. Yet the most significant threats to sensitive data come from those who are readily trusted by an organisation – their employees!

Employees and trusted contractors alike are often placed abovethe controls and defences that protect sensitive data within an organisation. With staff able to access all data stores and given a full set of modern communications tools from E-mail to Facebook on their desktop. This open environment coupled with an all too frequent lethargic management mindset towards internal data security,can make insiders a severe risk.

The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) reports that data breaches are up by 16% year on year, so it is more important than ever for organisations to be vigilant of insider threats.

Here’s a rundown of three of the most severe insider risks.

1 – Lack of control overuser access

The most critical insider attacks often occur because of a lack of control over who has access to confidential data. Companies are often unaware – or have little control – of where their sensitive data is and as a resultwhohas access to it.

To combat the problem of not knowing what you have and where it is it is not uncommon for organisations to allow employees to have free access to all data. The result is untrained staff with access to sensitive data often about areas of the business that they have no knowledge about

A recent case at the National Security Agency (NSA) saw a contracted employee arrested and charged with stealing classified data on the US government’s surveillance efforts. This sagareally underpins the importance of protecting data against insider threats.

2 – Poor management mindset

Our recent survey looking at deployment and attitudes to data classification reveals that many of the world’s leading organisations have a poor attitude to the security of personal data. The survey revealed that just 31% of companies are concerned about the volume of data they need to protect.

Consistently growing data volumes mean that organisations are struggling to understand where their sensitive information is located, with inadequate policies for how that sensitive information should be handled.

3 – Inadequate data security strategy

With many organisations clearly suffering from incomplete controls to detect and prevent the inappropriate transmittal or disclosure of sensitive information, the insider threat risk increases.

Data classification is at the heart of any data security strategy because without understanding the value of the information and where it is located, it is impossible to implement a comprehensive data protection program.

Data classification technology, like Boldon James Classifier, provides a way of educating employees about the sensitivity of the data they are creating, sending and storing. Thanks Brandon for the opportunity to speak here.  To put it simply, migraines are caused by irregular blood flow to the brain. In medical terms it is what is known as vasoconstriction followed by vasodilation and this cycle repeats and causes surges of blood to the brain and sets off a migraine. The triggers can vary but the causal cycle is always the same. Magnesium has the ability to penetrate the soft muscle tissue in the neck and shoulders, relaxing all the muscles in that area, evening out the blood flow to the brain. If you have regular blood flow (like the majority of the population) you then do not get a migraine. It’s that simple.

Well if it’s that simple why doesn’t the medical world just tell all their patients to take Magnesium?

Oh don’t get me started…. Why indeed? Maybe I am being harsh on the medical fraternity and perhaps it’s becasue they know that magnesium on it’s own is poorly absorbed and probably wont help most sufferers, but the sceptic in me says it’s because they cant write a script for magnesium and so there’s no kick backs in it for them. I am not sure the real answer, but all I know is that most of them know that magnesium helps, but very few of them tell their patients about it. From that I’ll let you work out the answer. But as a bizarre example, when a migraine sufferer is admitted to hospital and put on a drip to recover, it is most often a magnesium solution that is administered to the patient, so the medicos know the secrets of magnesium but are keeping it quiet.

Well you just said magnesium is poorly absorbed and won’t help most people. So I am confused, how do you make it work?

Yes Brandon it’s true that just taking Magnesium on its own probably wont help most people. Magnesium taken orally is usually poorly absorbed by our bodies and we retain only around 20% of it, so a migraine sufferer would have to take massive quantities orally for it to have any effects and that could mean up to 10 or 12 tablets a day. But there is a great deal of research done on magnesium absorption, literally hundreds of studies and a process was discovered a few years ago which dramatically improves the absorption rate of the magnesium by up to 4 times so people now absorb more than 80% of the magnesium in the supplement, if it’s manufactured using the right process.

So tell us about this process. How is it done and why doesn’t everyone do it?

Well essentially it involves combining Magnesium with B group vitamins including vitamins B3 & B6 and in our case we also use Zinc. It’s not a simple process and just taking those things separately won’t work the same. But we have developed a technique to combine them in the right ratio for optimum performance. And we also combined 2 other great compounds, being Cramp Bark and Passionflower, which are essential to the relief process. If I can put my sales hat on here for a moment I can say that our product dosage, which contains 300 mg of bio available magnesium, is equivalent of someone receiving 600mg of straight magnesium.
