SAN DIEGO, CA – October 06, 2016 — Can vocal training restore our faith in the political process? If the latest Presidential election proves anything, it’s that lack of trust in our American political candidates not only continues to skyrocket, but that corresponding trust in our news commentators reporting on these same public servants has continued to plummet to an all-time low. Why is that? How did we get here? And how can we climb back from what seems like an ever-expanding abyss?
America’s foremost leader in effective communication, Arthur Samuel Joseph submits that the reason we increasingly do not believe what our politicians are telling us is because in their carefully prepared remarks we do not hear the individual speaking—we only hear the politician. Sad to say, but the same creeping lack of authenticity can increasingly be said for news commentators who report on these same public officials, as well as so many others in everyday life.
As Joseph observes: “Every politician’s campaign today is extraordinarily crafted and finely scripted based on endless supplies of data, information, focus groups, and media consultants who process, dissect, distill and translate all of the above into what they perceive to be the “safest” most carefully constructed sound bites for their candidates. While this artfully crafts a message that campaign advisors would like their candidates to convey, it rarely if ever provides any really useful information or benefit to the public. In fact, it increasingly limits how each candidate phrases and parses their statements, which can result in creating even more ambiguity, not less. It’s imperative that the public be able to ascertain this information in order to make a truly informed decision pertaining to how they vote.”
As a result, Joseph further observes, whether through politicians’ live performances, as in Tuesday night’s debate, or their campaign ads, voters are made to be recipients of increasingly robotic, disingenuous deliveries – that wind up sounding a bit like processed food – presumed to satisfy one’s appetite for information, but which in fact rarely if ever satiates the underlying hunger for the truly all-natural and authentic messages that we crave. While the rhetoric and “white noise” has been designed by top teams to create maximum impact, in fact, each carefully crafted message begins to look more and more like a camel that was intended to be a horse as designed by a committee. What actually results are a breakdown, rather than a breakthrough to revealing underlying truths that can resonate best with voters and “truly sets us free.”
As an example, Joseph explains why both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are perceived as highly untrustworthy, which is largely because of their packaging and style as opposed to their technique. As Joseph observes Trump frequently attempts to bludgeon one into submission. His presentations are purposely designed to pander to our fears. He is not seeking consensus nor does he often explain his headline style of speaking with any supportive detail. Clinton on the other hand, largely responds in a well thought out, rehearsed, measured programmed manner. However, unlike Trump, she is often disconnected from the emotional core of who she might truly demonstrate she is. Both styles leave the voter still guessing as to what each candidate’s true Persona is and in a complete quandary as to whom they can ultimately trust with their futures and that of their loved ones. As Joseph further observes, in large halls or even on television, each candidate constantly ‘raises the pitch of their voice to be heard in the last row of the house.’
On television they try to unconsciously direct their vocal energy ‘to the camera’—presumably to connect with their audience. Yet in doing so, each candidate only becomes more disingenuous as they are not speaking with the viewer or listener, they are speaking to and at them. He also notes they speak with tongue and jaw tension, do not breathe strategically, present their narrative mono-chromatically, speak too rapidly, trail off at the ends of thoughts, and more often than not, are frequently not emotionally connected to their message.
Equally important— he states – both rarely warm up their voice, if ever, as an athlete or artist would stretch or vocalize before a performance. All this is compounded by sleep deprivation and constant travel which impacts vocal hygiene. This only adds to the unconscious bad habits that confound clear communication.
It is also telling “to watch Hillary Clinton read a teleprompter with her eyes darting from side to side or Donald Trump staring at the prompter and reading without blinking.” Subliminally, assumptions of their character by the way they speak are often incorrect. Learning to read a prompter is a simple skill that requires among other things—effective pace, breathing, vocal support, and awareness of body language.
Joseph recognizes that because speech is habit, none of us are actually aware that “we have a choice in how we present ourselves.” Discovering we do have a choice, then designing how we each want to be known, and then learning how to embody one’s Persona, enables us to convey not just the message but the messenger. The above knowledge, when combined with enhanced technical development is the difference between simply reciting rhetorical data, and achieving a real breakthrough to becoming trustworthy, believable and a respected master of one’s communication craft.
The above is central to why Joseph has now devoted the remainder of his career to passionately teaching politicians, news commentators, and ordinary business people and citizens alike how to achieve true mastery in conveying a true message – so that authenticity can be restored to the society in which we operate. Specifically, he teaches one how to breathe, warm up their voice, the importance of body language, how to discover and enhance one’s own unique persona and vocal identity. Being on a passionate mission to restore authenticity to all walks of society, Joseph now intends to offer special limited time one-on-one individual coaching sessions to qualified candidates and companies in which he will teach “the difference between authentic performance and mere presentation alone.”
“I do not know of a business school or university course that teaches what I do,” Joseph states proudly. “That is precisely why I was inspired to create this unique program for others. How can we be our best as a society if we do not even first know how to effectively embody and present that which is critical to our long-term well-being – our authentic Self – along with how to most effectively proclaim it?”
“As citizens we must take full responsibility and require those who aspire to lead us to communicate honorably and authentically,” Joseph states, “to genuinely be who they are, not present who they think or have been told we want to see. This is absolutely a critical first step in establishing Communication Mastery as a new political paradigm for the 21st Century.”
