But when developers began plans to build a massive four-story building on University Avenue where the one-story historic building, “The Shady Lane Building,” was located, Shady Lane’s future became severely challenged.

Yet, the four-story project was sent back to the drawing board on August 8, 2016 due to being architecturally incompatible with its surroundings but it’s expected to be eventually approved.

For Alice, the plans served as a challenge and opportunity for Shady Lane to find a new home. “It broke our hearts to leave our beloved Palo Alto downtown location, but the silver lining is we actually like our new location better. When one door closed, an amazing one opened for us last year and we are so grateful.”

Sitting just three miles away from the former location, Alice found a new location at the Sharon Heights Shopping Center off Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park where customers have enthusiastically followed. Now that the move has been completed, customers can find the same carefully selected artisan creations in a light-filled octagonal building in a flower-filled courtyard.

At the store, customers can browse through locally-made jewelry, art glass, ceramics, fine woodworking, and textile art, and they can discuss these unique treasures with the artisans themselves, many whom help in the store. Plus, Shady Lane offers a wealth of gift items mostly made in the USA, including an amazing selection of artisan jewelry specializing in sterling silver and natural gemstones, photography, Native American creations including Zuni carvings, bronze sculptures, and specimen-quality rocks, crystals, and fossils.

For Alice, the fact that the business has maintained its following, and has lasted over 40 years, is a huge accomplishment. “I never thought we could survive our rent doubling in 2008 when the new landlord took over our lease and we did. But when plans were submitted to build a new building on our site, we saw the writing on the wall.”

IN BRAZIL, LACK OF MANAGEMENT CAUSES MORE DAMAGE THAN CORRUPTION

According to estimates by the Brazilian Federal Public Ministry, the resources diverted by corruption schemes in Brazil lacerates the public reserves in about R$ 200 billions per year. But if the assault promoted by corruption has this scale, the dimension of the damage caused by bad administration is incalculable. Together, this combination can hold a country on misery. The analysis comes from economic assessor of Parana’s Federation of Commercial and Business Associations and Professor at FGV, Arthur Schuler da Igreja.

He mentions the Petrobras case as an example, where corruption and incompetence have created a tragic combo. “Fraud losses  at Petrobras, investigated by Lava Jato operation, were estimated in R$ 6 billions. In the other hand, the misleading administrative decisions, such as federal government’s decision to artificially hold the price of fuels in order to control inflation since 2005, have caused a devastation – at least R$ 50 billions in loss by bad administration, additionally, the loss of value in the stock market was R$436 billions in the same period”.

CORRUPTION

In corruption cases, the most harmful thing aren’t the financial losses. One of the worst impacts, according to Arthur Igreja’s understanding, is the moral. “The robbery of politicians isn’t the worst of all. More damaging is the idea that ends up being transmitted with this robbery, the idea that the illicit is somehow acceptable. It makes many people start to believe  that they can evade taxes for instance, because if politicians can, why shouldn’t the rest of population do it too? This is the big cancer of corruption”. “When a politician is caught pocketing R$ 79 millions, we get frustrated because it’s a great amount of money. But there are 204 millions of Brazilian citizens. The impact of the small individual decisions is much bigger’’.

Corruption destroys trust and promotes bureaucracy as a consequence. “When corruption is impregnated, business are made at defensive mode. That means more contracts, more litigation, more lawyers…more guarantees are required”, Igreja says. “Everyone creates steps to prevent corruption, motivated by the feeling that they will be betrayed. That’s why a corrupted country, by definition, is poor and inefficient”.

Another loss is on competitiveness. A non reliable country has problems to compete with others that are not highly corrupted. “The corrupted nation is more expensive because of it’s bureaucracy. It’s hard to compete in the international market”. The result is poverty, and that opens the way to more corruption. “The cycle becomes almost impossible to be broken”, says Arthur Igreja.

Besides that, companies located in corrupted countries have between 7% to 10% more employees than the ones from not corrupted countries, which represents more work cost. The interests rates also become higher. Money gets more expensive resulting in less money circulation and decrease in the economic activity.

INCOMPETENCE

Incompetence is even harder to be measured. That’s because it’s only possible to calculate consequences that come from concrete actions. Decisions not made and negligence, for example, also constitute lack of management, but are hard to evaluate.

According to Arthur, the incompetence at the Brazilian public government becomes astounding when the immobilized patrimony of state companies are compared to private companies. State owned companies have 48% of the immobilized patrimony in Brazil, but generate only 24% of the GDP. “In other words, for each R$1 of patrimony they have, they generate R$0,50 in revenues,” Arthur Igreja analyses. Meanwhile, private companies have the other 52% of the national patrimony with 76% of the GDP generation. “Some clear examples are Vale and Embraer, that used to be irrelevant companies internationally and, as soon as they were privatized, they became important global players.

Arthur Igreja also mentions the case of the Provisional Measure 579, that  suddenly changed the rules of concession renovations. The result of this “non-market decision” was disastrous. A study of the National Industry Confederation (CNI) points that, in the last 43 years, the investment level had a 60% reduction in relation to the GDP.  “Nowadays Brazil is the country with the most expensive energy bill in the world. This incompetent decision has penalized the electric system in more than R$ 130 billions”, according to Arthur Igreja.

Desjardin Remains to Stand the Test of Time

The year of 1848 was a busy one in terms of world events. It was a time of unrest throughout the world as numerous revolutions brought out as people fought against oppressive governments. France was at the forefront of that struggle with their own Revolution of 1848. On 4 November, France ratified a new constitution, thus ushering in a new era of government, the Second Republic of France to replace the temporary government that had been put in place. In the United States, 1848 marked the beginning construction of the Washington Monument to honor the country’s first American president and the start of the California Gold Rush.

Meanwhile in Paris, during 1848, the Desjardin Family began their business specializing in the manufacturing of metal tin and white iron aluminum stampings. The world has changed quite a bit since 1848. France has proudly risen above the tragedies it experienced through the first and second world wars and the harsh restrictions placed on its citizens during the German Occupation during the 1940s. During its renewal, some things have come and gone forever, but Desjardin Metal Packaging has remained as one of France’s oldest metal packing manufacturers. To this day, the company remains a leader in the industry and a major exporter of metal boxes worldwide as the company has continued to flourish in both innovation and technology since the mid-1900s.

History of Desjardin

Desjardin’s manufacturing facility was located within the 10th district of Paris from 1848 through 1962. The business specialized in manufacturing tinware, including such items as pots, pans, plates, iron lanterns, storage boxes that were covered with thin layer of tin.

In 1891, with the invention of the 35mm cinema film reel by American inventor Thomas Edison, Desjardin embarked on a new market by creating metal cans for preserving 16mm and 35mm films for the film industry. The company was the supplier of movie tins to Eastman Kodak and Agfa Gaveart for many years and their tins have been used to distribute film copy for all movies theatres run by Laboratories Eclair, LTC.

Just a few years later, Desjardin made an impact on yet another industry; this time the printing industry with its industrial box for packaging printing inks. During the 1900s, Desjardin began to manufacture iron containers for the food industry to be used with packaging biscuits and sweets. Gourmets may be familiar with their packaging for specialty food items from chocolate to caviar. However, the high-quality packaging did not end with food; leading cosmetic manufacturers also began to rely upon the quality metal tins manufactured by Desjardin to package their products.

In 1963, the Desjardin family moved its company from Paris to settle in Gonesse in the Paris region, where it continues to remain today. Until 1981, the Desjardin family owned and operated Desjardin Metal Manufacturing. During that year, current President Pierre Gachot took over the helm of the company and began his quest of modernizing the company and developing new products. One such product was the Caviar box with a vacuum closure introduced in 1988 that was inspired by Gachot’s experience with the development of the vacuum ink box.

Today, Desjardin is recognized for its expertise in the metal tin packaging industry. They produce aluminum tin packaging for various sectors of industry, including offset inks, food, cosmetics and movie theatres.

Hvar Gourmet, makers of premium organic olive oil used by some of Croatia’s best restaurants, seeks to develop direct-to-customer delivery from world-famous Hvar Island in order to achieve otherwise unavailable olive oil freshness

HVAR, Croatia – Ambitious foodie startup HVAR GOURMET announces that it is raising funds via crowdfunding platform KICKSTARTER in order to implement direct delivery of their premium, gourmet, small-batch olive oil. The company set out to raise €10,000 on Kickstarter to purchase bottling equipment (with €7,368 raised to date) so that they can begin direct delivery of premium olive oil, the freshness of which would be otherwise unavailable to customers.

Unlike wine, olive oil does not get better with age, and the closer you are to the pressing, the better the oil quality. This race against time underpins the urgency of Hvar Gourmet’s ambitious direct-to-customer delivery model. With traditional store bought oil, customers are left with ambiguous harvest dates and often stale oil (sometimes years out from the original harvest); with Hvar Gourmet, customers are guaranteed a superior fresh-taste experience.

Aside from the direct-delivery model, Hvar Gourmet offers a superior olive oil. There is a reason why it is the house olive oil of Hvar Island’s #1 restaurant, the world renowned Dalmatino. The lingering, black peppery taste of Hvar Gourmet’s oil (due in part to the characteristics of the regional Oblica olive and to a slightly earlier harvest) has gained it a dedicated following around the world. It has a pungent taste, low acidity, high levels of polyphenols (healthy antioxidants), and is 100% certified organic — everything you could ask for in an olive oil.

Lastly, the process of Hvar Gourmet’s olive oil production is a no holds barred gourmet oriented process. • Olives picked in October. This is considered “early-harvest” and they have found it leads to consistently better tasting oil. The downside: less oil per kilo of olives compared to later harvests.

• Their oil is cold-pressed at room temperature and is left raw and unfiltered.

For generations, the Milicic family has been making olive oil on Hvar Island, Croatia, which is incidentally also one of the most beautiful and frequented tourist destinations in Europe. For the last 10 years, the family has been refining their harvesting and olive pressing techniques with their family-owned mill and methodical lab testing.
