Having already been adopted in the PADI IDC Program with Multi Award Winning Platinum PADI Course Director Holly Macleod, The New PADI Advanced Open Water Diver program launches this September 2016.

Before looking at the changes let’s ask Holly what she thinks of the new course.

“The new PADI Advanced Course is fantastic and allows instructors to offer a wider spectrum of specialty areas and provides the diver with more scope and access to continuing education.”

Firstly the PADI Instructional Material has been updated with updated program standards for both the Instructor Manual and Guide to teaching available online. Students still will have the option of a paper manual  but can also now access the material from more personal devices such as a mobile phone with the new, mobile-friendly PADI Advanced Open Water Diver digital products and app.

So basically the first dive of any standardized PADI Specialty Diver Course including DSMB, Cavern, Ice, Full Face Mask and Rebreather which were previously unavailable as an Adventure Dive are now all incorporated as options in the revised Advanced Open water course. Also all of the Project AWARE Specialties are available including Dive Against Debris™, and Shark Conservation Specialty courses

Other revisions include Digital Underwater Photography and Digital Underwater Videography, which are now reclassified as Digital Underwater Imaging; and expansion of the Digital Underwater Photography to include video modules; this dive is now referred to as Digital Imaging. The Navigation Specialty will now also include references to use of an electronic compass

Another new component of the program is the “Think like a Diver” Section of the course which concentrates on encouraging divers to think about what they’re doing before, during and after every dive and gain a greater understanding of how to manage risks whilst improving their own dive skills. During this section of the course students will consider issues such as gas management, situational awareness and buddy communication.

So in the end it’s easy for experienced instructors to make the change as it provides the student more training options, perhaps in areas of specific interest. This allows the instructor to teach a wider range of specialty areas and could be viewed as an expansion of the current program. BUFFALO, NY – 9/1/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — A Robocall is a call generated by an automatic dialing telephone system, i.e. any call not initiated by a human finger, and their use is largely regulated by the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. These types of calls have become a huge headache for consumers. Despite the illegality, the amount of Robocalls being made to consumers is estimated to reach 30 Billion in the United States by year’s end, signaling an increase of over 50% from 2015 according to YouMail.

YouMail is a software company from Irvine, California, specializing in visual voicemail and Robocall blocking software.  YouMail has been tracking Robocall activity in order to provide the data cited in this report to the public at large.  The total number of Robocalls estimated to be placed this year is almost equal to 100 calls for every man, woman, and child in the United States.  More specifically, the city of Buffalo reached number 38th on the list of the ‘50 Most Robocalled Cities in America’ in May of this year.

While Congress and phone companies’ debate over how to deal these annoying automated calls, there isn’t much regular consumers can do except to take legal action against the offenders. 

“If you are receiving automated dialed calls to your cell phone without giving your prior express consent, you can be awarded up to $1,500 per call received.  Currently there is no way to stop these illegal calls from being made, so in the interest of justice, I think it’s important as many cases be brought against the offending entities as possible in order to make them pay a financial  price for breaking the law. If enough lawsuits are filed and enough judgements are handed down these companies may get the message and drastically reduce the number of illegal calls they make.”

Every call counts according to Andrews, and it’s important to document abuses as they happen.  Andrews continued,

“The first thing you can do is contact your cell provider and request your phone records. Secondly, you can compile a list detailing the time, date, and numbers that call you. Don’t forget that missed calls count as well. The best way to maximize your recovery is to account for as many calls as we can. While we are able to get the records from the offending company during a lawsuit, every bit of information helps.”

COLUMBUS, OH – 9/1/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET) — When his son Isaac died of meningitis type B at the age of 26, Neal Raisman     

fell into a deep depression. 

Raisman likened his loss of Isaac to having a foot ripped off. He could feel the raw pain and anger of the event.  And he lost his balance for a very long time. It is simply not easy to balance on one foot.   Just try it. You may have seconds of steadiness and control but then, imperceptibly something happens to disrupt your equilibrium. You begin to fall and have to put the other foot down. Try to imagine what it is like to not have the other foot.  You can’t put it down and well, you fall. 

He struggled through the days and with questions such as “How can a gracious God do this?”, “Where is he now?” and the big one, “Why?”  Answers did not come easily. Nor did relief from the seemingly endless pain and anger at losing his son, but he did finally learn to find a new balance in a world without his son. 

Through writing about his experience, he finally came to accept his loss and start living life again. The book Standing on One Foot has been read by others who lost a child. They found it to be the “most honest, open and helpful book on grief yet”. Another reviewer said “it leaves nothing out. The anger at life, the pain and the explorations into the physiology of death and philosophical ponderings are there. Great book.” One reader even stopped self-medicating after reading Standing on One Foot. 

Now Raisman wants to give the book away to hundreds of people who have lost a child. “I only hope it can help others escape the pain and anguish of a child’s death sooner” Raisman said. He is trying to raise the funds to print hundreds of copies and give them away free through a Kickstarter campaign.  

It took Raisman years to learn to balance again but he did. Along the way he grappled with raw anger, pain and despair as does anyone who has lost a child. But he did finally find answers to the questions that tore at his mind and others who have suffered such a tragic loss. And now he wants to share his experience and discoveries with others through his memoir of loss, grief and re-establishing balance in life on one foot.

A form filled out by employers regarding their benefits programs and workplace policies was the other component of the ranking formula, responsible for approximately one-quarter of the scores.
