Los Angeles – Stress on the job is bad – and experts say it is getting worse. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that workplace stress costs American businesses up to $300 billion a year. The Huffington Post recently referred to workplace stress as “The Health Epidemic of the 21st Century.”

At the center of this epidemic is Kim O’Neill, a certified personal empowerment coach who helps people achieve peace of mind at work. Coming from a background in public safety and working as a crime analyst for a busy police department in California, O’Neill knows what it feels like to consume a daily barrage of negative information.

After successfully conquering her own workplace stresses, O’Neill began teaching her clients how to go beyond the thoughts in their head and feel their way to a positive resolution of stress through a process she calls “Emotional Alignment.” She teaches her clients to get in tune with what their body is telling them and to pay attention to their emotions. “When your heart and mind are not in sync it leads to overthinking, overanalyzing, stress, anxiety and ultimate chaos – even if it is only in your mind,” O’Neill says.

Based on her experience and training, O’Neill offers five practical tips to anyone who wants to reduce stress and create emotional alignment during their work day.

1. Take breaks. This releases the momentum of tension build-up. “It’s all about being in the flow,” O’Neill says. “The more often we allow our mind to relax, the easier it’ll be to find solutions to complex problems.”

2. Accept coworkers for who they are. “They might annoy you or upset you at times, but try to find common ground with them,” O’Neill advises. “Not accepting others is a sign of not accepting something about yourself. It is easier for you to stay in your own alignment when you accept others, because it means you’re also accepting yourself.”

3. Practice thinking thoughts that serve you. “Our thoughts and emotions are linked. If you’re frustrated, angry, annoyed, or sad, you can start to feel better by reminding yourself that it’s okay to feel whatever you’re feeling,” O’Neill says. “When you feel the emotions, you release them. Then, deliberately start to talk yourself into a better feeling place. Remind yourself about the positive things happening in your life and all that you have to be grateful for.”

4. Visualize. According to O’Neill, this means to see in your mind’s eye the outcome you desire. “When we visualize, we are in a safe space to create our future before we ever see it actualized,” O’Neill says. “Visualizing also helps us strengthen our alignment, making it easier to see and feel the abundance of possible outcomes that await us. It takes practice, but it’s possible to be in a fast-paced, busy environment and still maintain inner calm and peace.”

5. Take action. “If you intend to create a new reality for yourself, taking action is how you can manifest that much quicker,” O’Neill says. “You don’t have to know how everything will work out in advance. When you practice tuning in to what you’re feeling and then aligning your energy with how you’d prefer to feel, it becomes easier to know what action to take next,” says O’Neill.

For Kim O’Neill, the bottom line for dealing with stress is not to hang on, but to let go. “People are powerful, but the only thing we ever have control over is ourselves. When we don’t pay attention to our emotions and take time to shift them, we are living life by default, giving our power away. Tuning in to our emotions brings the insight and wisdom we need to experience a different reality.”

‘Fiduciary’ Rule Reveals High Cost of Hiring the Wrong Financial Professional

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – 11 Aug, 2016 – It’s surprising, but true – some financial professionals, like securities brokers and insurance agents, were only recently required to act in the best interest of their clients.

The reason has to do with how the financial services industry operates. Traditionally, securities brokers and insurance agents were required to act under what’s known as a “standard of suitability,” meaning that as long as a particular investment or insurance product was right for the client it didn’t necessarily need to be the best choice from the options available.

It’s something of which the public was generally unaware, compounded by confusion over the various roles and requirements of the different types of financial professionals, and the legal responsibilities of each.

Yet it had the potential to impact an individual’s or couple’s quality of life in retirement. For instance, if a financial representative had two similar insurance products or investments, but each with different fees, the consumer might find themselves in the more expensive product.

Consumer information provider NerdWallet analyzed a variety of savings scenarios in a recent blog post, and in one case found that paying just 1 percent more in investment fees could cost a person more than $590,000 in returns over 40 years.

It’s what popular investment guru and Vanguard founder John Bogle refers to as the “tyranny of compounding fees.” Just like the accelerating effect that compounding interest has on the growth of retirement savings, the same thing can happen—only in the opposite direction—with insurance or investment fees. According to an April 6 press release put out by the Office of the Press Secretary, The White House Council of Economic Advisers estimates the higher costs and lower resulting returns hit American workers to the tune of $17 billion a year.

The Department of Labor, driven by a number of high-profile lawsuits, as well as a greater sense of urgency for effective retirement savings strategies, stepped in, resulting in the “Conflict of Interest Final Rule” from the Department of Labor released in April, also known as the DOL’s fiduciary rule.

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines fiduciary as relating to or involving trust (such as the trust between a customer and a professional). For the purposes of retirement advice, the DOL’s rule is meant to protect consumers by requiring financial professionals who provide retirement investment advice to consumers who hold funds in an ERISA product, such as a 401k or IRA, abide by a fiduciary standard—putting their clients’ best interest before their own profits.

The question of how, exactly, the rule will be enforced, coupled with a lack of general awareness of the term “fiduciary,” means it’s implementation is anything but clear. One thing that is clear, however, is strategic advantage and greater importance of hiring a financial professional who understands their responsibilities and will act in a fiduciary capacity.

“Before talking about the market or even thinking of opening an account, the financial professional and client should get organized,” says Bill Wilkinson, CFP, ChFC, CLU, CASL, AIF, president of Scottsdale, Arizona-based 360 Wealth Management, Inc. and an Investment Adviser Representative and insurance professional. “The organizational strategies I use with my clients include building a balance sheet, developing an estate planning flowchart, calculating a cash-flow statement out to the age of 100. When we do this, and show them a true view of their financial situation, it doesn’t take long for their eyes to widen.”

Data Protection Wake-Up Call for UK Business

August 12, 2016 – A survey conducted by Boldon James of public and private sector organisations reveals that companies have an indifferent attitude to data classification, with only 14% of companies having a data classification policy in place and only 5% using a data classification solution that involves users in the process of data protection.

In the world of information security, data classification relates to the labelling of documents, files and messages based on their value or level of sensitivity to an organisation. Data classification is a critical component of every good data protection policy, because correctly classified data is better protected from leakage or theft.

Leading technology research firms such as Forrester and Gartner both report that data classification is the basis for a data-centric approach to security, so the results from Boldon James’s survey results will come as a wake-up call to businesses.

The new EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) – which requires companies to adhere to more rigorous data protection policies – comes into force May 2018. Despite the UK’s recent decision to leave the EU it is highly likely that UK companies will still be required to adhere to the regulation; and regardless of their location, organisations will have to conform to the regulations if they hold any data on EU citizens.

David Langton, Marketing Director at data classification specialists Boldon James, explains: “It is critical that UK businesses are not distracted by the decision to leave the EU and see this as a get-out clause. The GDPR is designed to help organisations achieve best practices for data security and it is actually a good set of rules to follow to ensure that organisations are consistently employing best practice security methods to increase data protection and reduce risk.”

The worrying survey results highlight that essential data security standards are not being widely implemented. Perhaps more concerning, given the potential impact on brand reputation and company value, is the fact that only 12% of organisations see data security as a Board issue.

With the EU GDPR seeing businesses fined up to €20 million, or 4% of their global revenue, for breaking data protection law, many firms could be put out of business for the misuse of data.

The survey results also revealed another disturbing revelation; 58% of companies classify data manually without the use of a data classification solution. This is a major concern for data security, as it is almost impossible to enforce a classification policy without the use of a data classification tool. With only 5% of surveyed companies involving their users in data classification, it seems that organisations are missing a huge opportunity to actively engage their employees in data protection and transform security culture as a result.

David Langton continues: “Data classification should be at the forefront of every company’s security approach and is typically the first step to achieving a successfully data-centric security strategy. However, a large number of the businesses we surveyed appear to be overlooking this most fundamental aspect of data protection, missing an opportunity to proactively improve organisation-wide data protection. This leaves them open to regulatory scrutiny and increases the risk of financial exposure and reputational damage.”
