Klogene Therapeutics, Inc. awarded a $1.49 Million grant for Alzheimer’s disease drug development

BOSTON, MA – 16 May, 2016 – Klogene Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has been awarded a $1.49 Million small business innovation research grant (SBIR) by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The funds from this award (number R44AG053084) will be used for the development of novel therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The intellectual property, which is the initial basis for Klogene’s drug development program, is being exclusively licensed from Boston University and is the result of years of collaboration between Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School affiliated Laboratory for Drug Discovery in Neurodegeneration (LDDN) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH).

“This is a major milestone for our research. My laboratory at Boston University School of Medicine has studied the Klotho gene in the brain and suggested neuroprotective therapeutic strategies based on its up-regulation since 2003,” said Dr. Carmela Abraham, Professor of Biochemistry and Pharmacology at Boston University School of Medicine and co-founder of Klogene Therapeutics, Inc. “We are pleased that our pioneering work has been endorsed by a generous NIH grant and by additional researchers at other institutions, who are now also studying the role of Klotho in the brain and its potential as a central nervous system (CNS) therapeutic,” she added. “I dedicated the last 36 years of my career to Alzheimer’s disease research and I do not intend to stop until we have a treatment or a cure. I am more optimistic than ever that we will succeed,” said Dr. Abraham.

“The small molecule compounds we developed in this collaboration penetrate the blood brain barrier, have good drug-like properties and boost Klotho levels in the brain as much as two-fold, without toxic effects,” said Dr. Kevin Hodgetts, Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School, Director of the LDDN at BWH, and co-founder of Klogene Therapeutics, Inc. “We are excited to see them being further tested and developed into a drug by Klogene,” he added.

“We are excited to see such a promising novel Alzheimer’s therapy advance,” said Dr. Howard Fillit, Founding Executive Director and Chief Science Officer of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF). Dr. Fillit is a geriatrician, neuroscientist and leading expert in Alzheimer’s disease. “The ADDF has supported Dr. Carmela Abraham’s research from its early stages and continues to do so today as her work with Dr. Kevin Hodgetts progresses from academic research labs into a biotech startup.”

In addition to the AD-related published work, Dr. Abraham’s team reported that boosting expression of the Klotho gene in the brain has the potential to be beneficial in multiple sclerosis and other neurodegenerative conditions.

Klogene Therapeutics Inc. has assembled a world-class team of scientific advisors including Dr. Makoto Kuro-o who discovered and named the Klotho gene about twenty years ago and studied its role primarily in Chronic Kidney Disease, Dr. Manfred Windisch a world-renown expert in CNS drug development who planned and conducted 25 Phase I to Phase III clinical trials, Dr. George Trainor a recipient of American Chemical Society’s “Heroes of Chemistry Award” and a medicinal chemistry executive who advanced 35 drug candidates into clinical development during his career, and Dr. Aaron Ciechanover a 2004 laureate of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The Truth of How Venezuela Slid into Crisis

“CNN’s title on Venezuela addressed the obvious–falling oil prices, but it failed to see how energy, healthcare, literacy, government and religion play a role,” says Dr. Richard Ruhling who spent time in Venezuela and offers the following insights.

The economy was booming with high prices for everything, thanks to their oil. CNN’s paragraph on Energy included a graphic of Coca Cola. Dr. Ruhling remembers it differently after pulling teeth in a Caracas dental clinic because Coca Cola was so successful as marketing their drink that teeth were so rotten, they were easy to pull. Half the poor people couldn’t read or write.

For healthcare, CNN cited the Pharmaceutical Federation of Venezuela that the country lacks 80% of basic medical supplies needed. Drug companies cry for help to pay for drugs that would be needless if swamps were drained to get rid of mosquitos carrying yellow fever and if people had clean water to drink instead of pollution and Amebic dysentery, says Ruhling whose degree in Public Health and Medicine led to his teaching Health Science at Loma Linda University later.

Ruhling says healthcare is 90% what people put in their mouths. The use of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, sugary drinks, refined and packaged foods cause most health problems in most nations. Venezuela’s probems may have changed, but nutrtition and sanitation is 90% of healthcare if people wouldn’t do drugs (prescriptions, over the counter, in beverages, cigarettes, bad habits.)

Ruhling decries calling Obamacare “healthcare” when so much of its 20,000 pages were written by drug companies, but adverse drug reactions have made medical care a leading cause of illness and death. Every country practicing western medicine is on the brink of bankruptcy.

When Ruhling flew into Caracas he witnessed a communist demonstration for the president of Cuba who was arriving at the same time. Ruhling was told that Communism finds fertile ground in poor ignorant people, promising a false prosperity that politicians also offer here.

Some high-sounding philosophy is based on ignorance of biblical principles—if a man doesn’t work, he doesn’t eat. Venezuela is lush with vegetation. They wouldn’t have to be poor.

Getting to the core of the problem, Ruhling observes that those countries of Latin America were colonized in the New World at the same time America was founded. Why such a dramatic difference in destiny? Their natural resources and rain forests should make them equal or ahead of America that has vast waste lands in western states.

Ruhling notes that Latin America was colonized by priests while America was founded by men and women who risked their lives to flee the papacy in the Old World for freedom here. Our Constitution kept the church out of politics (different from Catholic countries) and we did well until prosperity blunted our spiritual perceptions to think everything is okay.

We love Reagan for his quick wit and for getting Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, but he also appointed an ambassador to the Vatican—something Truman could not do because of protest after Rome signed a concordat with Hitler to make the world Catholic when Hitler won.

Reagan was weak on history (show biz?) and he agreed with John Paul to open our border, and he ok’d REX 84 detention camps for illegal aliens. Now aliens are welcome but protesters of a New World Order may be taken to FEMA camps for re-education or…? Ruhling cites online sources and notes the pope riding a beast that represents New World Order in Revelation 17.

“America is like a rebellious teenager who is old enough to choose for himself and those choices often lack wisdom,” says Ruhling. He sees America as unable to avert the consequences of bad decisions for more than a generation. It’s now what the majority want.

Trauma: A Powerful New Film About Military Medics

New York, NY – On April 25 2016, Ryan Cunningham and The Colony Media launched a Kickstarter campaign for Trauma, an extraordinary new film that documents the heroism and struggles of a medevac unit in Afghanistan and their lives afterward. The team is currently looking to raise $50,000 so they can hire an editing team that will craft a powerful film from more than one hundred hours of astonishing footage.

“The very different men and women from the medevac missions – from family types to fierce individuals, unwavering cynics, flippant jokers and staunch faithfuls – are now spread right across America from New York to Louisiana, Texas, Idaho, Washington, Alabama, and California,” says Director Harry Sanna, “They’re pretty much everywhere. Whether still on military bases or in civilian life, they’ve all forged lives beyond who they were on that helicopter. And yet, they are all still there.” 

Harry Sanna is Australian journalist and filmmaker who was based in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2011, visiting bases in the East and South of the country. In early 2011, Sanna was embedded with a C Company Dustoff, Mountain Division, 3-10 GSAB medevac unit at FOB Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. Sanna intensively filmed while living and flying alongside a Blackhawk medevac platoon, capturing daily life on base and on missions. 

In 2014 and 2015, Sanna reconnected with the medics in their various hometowns and conducted frank interviews with them about their memories and also their success in integrating their experiences with their new jobs and home lives. The result is a candid and often moving portrayal of those individuals that offers insight into the challenges faced by many veterans. For Sanna, the purpose of the film was always, “to breathe some human complexity back into our go-to concept of a veteran.”

The costs involved in taking a film from footage to completed movie are significant, so New York based post production company Afterparty VFX has pledged to cover any additional post production costs beyond the money raised by Kickstarter to ensure that the film is completed.

“Harry has some wonderful ideas to help tell this story in a truly unique and insightful way. Some of those ideas are expensive,” comments Producer David Gaddie, “We are all very hopeful that our campaign exceeds the target so that Harry can complete his film exactly as he has imagined it.”

Thrinacia Reach Crowdfunding Service Launches to the Public

Metro Vancouver, BC – On May 10 2016, Thrinacia Inc. announced that they were launching their service and website crowdfunding widget, Reach, for the general public. Thrinacia Reach allows you to create your own advanced crowdfunding campaigns and host them directly on your own website via simple HTML widget code that can be copied and pasted into the website.

“With Reach there are no monthly fees or charges and campaigns are free to create and use,” explains Business Developer, Sebastian Klassman, “You can create campaigns for different causes such as donations, rewards, presales, fundraisers and so on. You also get to choose what type of campaign funding you want: All or Nothing or Keep It All.”

There are no limits on how many campaigns you can create and host with Thrinacia Reach, and they only charge 1% on any processed contributions. All credit card processing fees are separate and directly payable to Stripe. The service is available worldwide and there are already thousands of active campaigns using Thrinacia’s network.

“Reach will allow Thrinacia to offer a highly functional infrastructure (i.e. full white label crowdfunding website) with its Atlas engine and REST API,” says Klassman, “It will also allow Thrinicia to compete on the other fronts such as onsite presales and single campaigns, where players like Celery have been in high demand.”

Thrinacia Reach features an advanced crowdfunding widget developed in AngularJS 2 with Semantic UI, that uses Thrinacia proven Atlas engine and REST API. Reach offers full crowdfunding features such as Contributor Lists, Reward Levels, FAQ, Comments, Updates, single sign in system and so on through the use of CORS.

All it takes is few lines of HTML code to be pasted into any website and campaign is instantly enabled and running on that website (after it’s approved by Thrinacia Reach staff), thus effectively bypassing centralized websites like Kickstarter or Indiegogo and their much larger fees.

Success On Display At The Inaugural FTCC Small Business Summit In Fayetteville NC

FTCC held its first annual Small Business Summit during Small Business Week May 1-7, 2016. Sponsored by Wells Fargo and promoted by local groups, the event was enthusiastically received.

Cindy Burns is Dean of Business Programs at Fayetteville Technical Community College. Tamara Bryant is the Director of the Small Business Center there. Together they had a vision.

During National Small Business Week, they wanted to provide an event that would, in their words, “equip, empower and encourage people to start, run and grow a business.”

The seeds of their idea were sown at another of their events, the local chapter of 1 Million Cups, developed by the Kauffman Foundation to promote entrepreneurship. Burns and Bryant are the organizers who brought it to Fayetteville and are making it a success.

They applied their formula to the FTCC Small Business Summit held on Friday, May 6th with the same result, success! They outlined the program, secured a major sponsor, recruited an acclaimed keynote speaker, arranged breakfast and lunch, set up the panels, scheduled the breakout sessions and worked tirelessly to make it a memorable and valuable event for the attendees.

Gracious opening remarks were made by FTCC President Dr. Larry Keen, who made the attendees feel welcome and Jan Spell, President of the Hope Mills Chamber, who lauded the audience on their commitment to attend.

This free kick-off event was sponsored by Wells Fargo with help from Banking District Manager Deanne Robinson-Blue and Cape Fear Market President Greg Reames.

Robinson-Blue moderated the Access To Capital Panel discussion, of which Reames was a panelist along with SBA rep Don Spry, CEED Capital Loan Officer Scott Keen and Methodist University business professor/Angel Fund rep Pam Bierman.

Wells Fargo sponsorship enabled the FTCC Culinary Department to offer a fabulous breakfast spread including fresh coffee and juice, freshly baked blueberry and cranberry muffins, fennel raisin scones, petits pains au chololat and more.

Following breakfast was the first panel discussion, the Entrepreneurial Speaker Series: Local Entrepreneurs. This panel was comprised of four successful local business owners with experience ranging from 14 months to 30 plus years: Brenda Howell, owner and lead medical massage therapist at Healing Hands Body Therapy; Belle Martin, a successful Mary Kay Sales Director; Jerome Scott, The Insurance Guy, providing services since 1986; and Bill Bowman, founder and owner of Up & Coming Weekly Magazine.

The panel was moderated by Don Matheson, CEO of Matheson Marketing and Consulting, and President of Business Builders Network, a local business think tank. The discussion consisted of six questions posed to each of the panelists. Afterwards, the audience was allowed to ask their questions. The panelists shared information paired with their own experience.

Lunch was prepared and served by an FTCC Culinary Arts degree recipient, Chef Luis Irizarry and his crew from Elite Catering in Hope Mills NC. The tasty spread consisted of chicken marsala with mushrooms or pepper steak, rice and a medley of fresh vegetables in an Italian marinade. Dessert was strawberry short cake.

After lunch, ten individual breakout sessions were served up as well, covering subjects including power branding on social media, resources for veterans and taking a business to its next level.

Brenda J. Johnson, Etiquette Coach and author of the book Get Noticed!, commented, “I really felt this event was informative, inspirational and well worth attending. It was well-planned, the facilitators were excellent and the topics relevant. I also benefitted from the networking aspect.”

The keynote speaker, Denise Ryan of FireStar Speaking, started in Fayetteville and is now Raleigh-based. With the flair of an actress and command of her subject, she delivered an energetic presentation of wit, humor and business tips, which attendees could readily implement.  Enthusiastic participants were treated to some signature fireball candy.

When asked her thoughts, Ms. Ryan said, “Not only did FTCC do a great job of hosting a fantastic Summit, it was exciting to see so many current and prospective business owners in attendance. I was impressed not only by the number of participants, but also by their quality. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Fayetteville!”

Indeed. The program went so well that Robinson-Blue mentioned in the wrap-up to the event that Wells Fargo is already interested in sponsoring next year’s event.

Cindy Burns sums it up this way, “We wanted to provide learning opportunities for small business owners which help them find solutions and be more successful. The Business Summit also gives them a chance to network with others so that our economic community will thrive.”
