Thiruvananthapuram, February 8, 2016: Curtains came down on the three-day Nypunyam International Summit and Skill Fiesta 2016 today. Prizes to the winners of the Skill Fiesta contest were given away at the valedictory function addresssed by Sri Shibu Baby John, Minister for Labour & Skills, Government of Kerala.  The  winners in each category got a gold medal and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, while the second prize winners were presented with a silver medal and Rs 50,000 each.

Sri Shibu Baby John, Minister for Labour & Skills, in his address, said that with the Nypunyam International Skill Summit and Skill Fiesta 2016, Kerala has set an example for the whole of the country to follow. The state should now look at being the destination for upscaling of skills for educated youth, he said .

Pointing out that the roadmap is now ready, the Minister said there are a couple of obstacles that we now need to remove from our path.  It is a fact that we do not understand the dignity of labour. Parents are not sure as to how the aptitude of a child is determined. Several social stigmas come attached when a future career is thought about. We attach a lot of importance to other factors, he said, wondering how better is an employed engineer than an employed plumber!  The prevailing system is such that people live in an unrealistic world. We need to change that, only then will skill development be meaningful, the Minister added.

Another problem we witness is the  way the industry laments on shortage of skilled workforce. However, the industry isnt doing much to create a skilled workforce, the minister said. The indutry needs to hand hold talent and develop skills in youth.

By overcoming obstacles, Kerala can look forward to be a global destination for upscaling of skills. Kerala should shun its land of controversies tag and tansform itself into the land of hopes, Sri Shibu Baby John said.

Sri Rahul R IRS, Managing Director, Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE), Dr Ramesh Babu, President SMS’ 80Foundation & SKINET Member, Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE) offered felicitaions and Sri Sreekumar B, Aditional Director, Directorate of Training, proposed a vote of thanks.

Various topics of importance were discussed in the sessions that were organised over the past two days of the Nypunyam International Skill Summit and Skill Fiesta 2016. The need for bringing about the right balance in education and skill development at the academic level went through a lot of deliberations at different sessions of the summit. Speakers were of the opinion that there needs to be a perfect balance in academics and skilling at the school and college levels.

Highlighting the issue of unemployment among educated youth, speakers spoke on how education will have to address the issue by identifying the changing environment in the current world. Dignitaries spoke about how training should be provided with modern day machinery and should also ensure that the ‘skills for life’ factor attains high priority.

Speakers were also of the opinion that enhancement of public-private partnerships to develop competency based vocational education in the country. This according to them would also require a change in mindset in the skills sector.

A session on international best practices introduced some of the most prolific skill practices employed by various skill trainers from around the globe. Among those discussed was the vocational education training (VET) practiced in Australia, through which citizens are made eligible for loans to get involved in vocational training irrespective of their age.

The session also deliberated on the importance of organizing skill competitions, like those that are being done by the education sector in the UK.  Skilling practices being followed in India also attracted mention, with speakers stating that some of the practices have emerged as inspirational ones at the global level.

However, we just wanted to make it better, add new features and modify the existing features so we can make it more user-friendly, or employer-friendly,” commented the CEO and managing director of Wangya Computer Co Ltd, the software development company that has developed the employee monitoring software program. He also informed that the development team is now working on a new parental control software program.
