The control of emissions from Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPS) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) is a mandate of the U.S. EPA and state departments of environmental protection. 

As such, industrial and manufacturing facilities meet compliance to federal environmental regulations by installing pollution controls like oxidation systems. Oxidation systems include catalytic and thermal oxidizers that “incinerate” and “decompose” pollutants in processing streams. 

The difference between a catalytic oxidizer and thermal oxidizer is the temperature at which contaminants are destroyed. In a catalytic oxidizer, destruction occurs at temperatures between 650°F. and 1000°F. during catalytic oxidation operations. Thermal oxidation systems operate at higher temperatures, depending on the type of contaminant air stream.

Design Criteria Requirements

In order to optimize efficiency in air treatment systems, the basic premise is to install equipment that can produce 99% or greater efficiency ratings for purer air quality. However, equipment design to achieve these efficiency ratings for catalytic oxidizers and thermal oxidizers, depends on the contaminant source in the air stream. For example, VOCs such as gasoline, toluene, styrene, formaldehyde, xylene and others are destructible with the use of used catalytic and thermal oxidizers. 

In most cases, the input volume of contaminants should be compatible with the overall design of the air treatment system that releases emissions into the atmosphere from the outlet. 

For instance, an air treatment system with a thermal oxidizer for gasoline emissions decomposes hazardous petrochemical gases at a high temperature and releases them into the atmosphere in oil refineries at safe levels. 

Regenerative Thermal Oxidation 

Regenerative thermal oxidizers are highly cost-effective by repurposing end process emissions. This type of emission destruction relies on a process of high temperature thermal oxidation. 

By a combination of temperature, turbulence, residence time and oxygen, pollutants are converted into carbon dioxide and water vapor which meets compliance regulations and are safely released into the atmosphere. 

For many industrial and manufacturing facilities, the cost of emission control can be prohibitive if there are several pollution sources on site. The U.S. EPA provides a guide for particulate matter (PM) for industries, types of sources and PM control efficiency ratings.
