Designed to help deaf or hard of hearing patients interact with medical staff in emergencies

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – September 10, 2015 – The Deaf Emergency Awareness Form (D.E.A.F.), a new, innovative booklet for emergency situations, has just been announced. D.E.A.F. is a booklet designed to facilitate interaction between emergency medical staff and patients who are deaf or hard of hearing through the use of American Sign Language. More specifically, it is for the use by medical staff to help access the patient before an interpreter becomes available. Aside from Sign Language Dictionaries and abbreviated guides there are no effective tools to aid communication in such a situation. That is why the D.E.A.F. booklet is such an important, life-changing tool.

The Deaf Emergency Awareness Form is a visual form of communication which includes ASL vocabulary and precise illustrations that are easily comprehensible to anyone who signs. It is used by pointing to the picture of the word or phrase a person would like to use on the page. Medical staff can use the booklet to do an assessment on the deaf or hard of hearing patient in order to communicate better. The deaf patients can also point or use the fingerspelling page to address their symptoms or concerns to medical staff. It utilizes common general and medical signs to help provide necessary information quickly. However, before this booklet can help bridge that gap in communication, D.E.A.F. needs help. Australi Fantasy Comic Series is Releasing its First Big Issue!

Australi’s first BIG issue will be 25-30 full colour pages. It introduces our main characters, including Maloo, the Prince and the mysterious Guardians,” explains the creator, “The second half of the first book will include our art and process book. It features a comprehensive guide on how to create real characters, interesting worlds and perilous stakes. We talk about exposition vs. action, how to avoid clichés and how to create worlds that tell stories on their own.”

Australi follows the story of Maloo, a young Aboriginal boy searching for his people and a place to call home. Set twenty years after the European, Chinese and Middle Eastern empires first set foot on Australi’s shores, Maloo must navigate a new world full of unique and dangerous trials.  

Maloo unwillingly becomes the hope of his people when an old prophecy is handed down. Now, with not only the British Empire after him but also pirates, poachers and mercenaries, Maloo must find his inner spirit to fulfil the heavy burden placed upon him. 

“Why Australi? We were inspired by the films Ferngully and The Never Ending Story. The Importance of Psychology in Addiction Treatment

The mind is, perhaps, the most powerful weapon anyone has to fight addiction.
While the physical body is definitely involved in drug cravings, the mind has the power to overcome the body, and it does so every day, many times a day.

The power of the addict’s mind has simply been turned toward the task of maintaining the addiction, rather than preventing its continuance.  The addict who has a high-functioning life despite the abuse of drugs or alcohol is a talented strategist who is expert in reading the emotions of others and good at working three steps ahead.  Ensuring that they will always have their drug of choice is not something a weak minded person, or someone without mental discipline will be able to pull off in conjunction with the management of a reasonable life and work balance, especially for any amount of time. Turning the addict’s mind toward the prevention of addiction behavior is part of what addiction recovery treats, alongside the underlying emotional issues that can lead to and reinforce addiction, and the physical recovery of the addict’s control over their body.

Along with the medical testing that should occur when a patient enters detox, there should be psychological testing performed as well. This testing, which is not painful or lengthy, should give the professionals treating the patient enough information to understand how the patient’s judgment, insight, abstract reasoning, and imagination are functioning.  Because the mind plays such a significant role in ensuring continued sobriety, there is great value to being able to judge the mental assets of the patient early on in the recovery process.

A recovery program should be designed to meet the needs of the specific addict who is entering treatment.  While there are some aspects of recovery that play throughout all recovery programs and make the recovery platform resilient, the bespoke design of a recovery treatment program for an individual addict is what can extend the recovery to last a lifetime.

Psychological testing can sound scary, but in fact it is not a frightening process at all.  The experienced, informed and compassionate mental health professional will start by simply talking with and observing the patient.  Any physical habits, like tics, and verbal habits, quirks and patterns can help the therapist understand where the patient’s mind is.  Facial expressions and the patient’s general appearance are also keys that can give the psychologist clues to the best way to help the patient.  

Making sure that the recovery program designed for the individual addict is going to be effective is the primary goal of the psychological testing process. It is important for the family and friends of an addict to understand that alcohol and drug dependence can be a significant problem even when the drugs are not abused or even used every day.  For someone who is struggling with finding their balance with the use and abuse of substances, there is great value in a recovery treatment program to regain control of their life and live in sobriety.

The game is designed for two to four players with a single deck, but more players can be added with a second deck of either Crack/Classic; double the deck for double the players. The decks are color coded on the backside so they can be easily separated. However, before everyone can enjoy this game, Partying Puppies needs help. That’s why they launched this Kickstarter campaign. The goal of this project is to raise $10,000 by October 10, 2015.  The funds raised will go towards production and manufacturing.
